A recent study by North Carolina researchers showed 45 minutes of intense exercise boosted the metabolic rate in male participants for a whopping 14 hours. This is the site I was reading: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-02-01/health/sc-health-0201-fitness-burn-20120201_1_post-exercise-exercise-scientists-metabolism

I'd like to know what your take on this is. Have you heard of more of these studies. Does anyone feel as though they are really experiencing this?

Reason for asking. I'm currently running 3 - 4 miles 3 days a week @ 10.5 minute miles. I get to the point where I kind of settle into it and just "do my time". Wondering if it would be more effective to run 2 or even 1 mile @ 8 or 9 minutes instead, shortening my cardio time but increasing my effort.

Also, anyway to tell how much a person is increasing their oxygen consumption? I know the basics but they are somewhat complex and I was wondering if you could figure it using stroke volume, heart rate, and maybe bmi or muscle mass (how do I calculate muscle mass)?

Thanks in advance!!
