I'm suppose to consume 165g carbs and 45g protein, I thought that carbs were not good for you that they make you gain weight and that you should eat more protein to loose weight.....im confused

you need carbs too just not a whole lot and mostly whole grains. I try to get more to eat more protein because you are right it does take more protein to build muscle. Each person has a unique balance that works best for them. Try to up you protein while watching carbs. Everything needs to be portion controlled, but carbs by themselves are not bad its what type and how much you eat that matters.0

Overall caloric balance will be the primary mechanism for weight gain/weight loss. Macronutrients will effect body composition and generally speaking, I would prioritize proteins and fats over carbohydrates -- but carbs do not make you fat by themselves and they are not unhealthy.
45g protein seems awfully low to me.0 -
Don't believe for a second that MFP's cookie-cutter calorie/macronutrient recommendations are optimal for your goals.0

MFPs settings for carbs and protein are based on the USDA goverment recommendation. Most people on here tend to agree that this is a bit carb-heavy and protein-light. It won't hurt you to drop the carbs a bit and make up for it in protein (unless you have a doctors recommendation to avoid protein rich diets ie. due to kidney problems or the like).

I think if you did a little research on the role carbohydrates and protein play in metabolism you will better understand what to eat and when. Reading studies gets confusing because they seem to reverse themselves every so often. What in fact is happening is that the science of understanding evolves and so our understanding changes. Just this morning I read a study that suggests a high fat, low carb and high protein diet can be detrimental.
Unless you are prepping for some sort of fitness competition or major endurance event, I would not personally obsess about ratios. If you goal is to lose weight than the formula is simple, burn more calories than you take in on average. Very generally, and I mean generally, burning 3500 calories per week will yield a 1 pound weight loss. Please do not make that any sort of target because it is different for each person, but it will give you a very ballpark idea about the ratio of calories in to calories out per week.
If on the other hand you are prepping than I suggest you seek out those on MFP who are experienced athletes or competitors and seek their wisdom.0 -
