Should I count iced tea (unsweetened) as part of my water consumption for the day or should I be drinking 64 oz of water and only water?

I don't count unsweetened tea as water consumption because tea has caffeine and is made from tea leaves, H20 is pure. Some people consider tea a diurectic...

I agree...if its anything other than green tea, which doesnt have the caffeine. What I do is for every caffeinated drink I have, I drink that much more regular water.

Herbal and decaffeinated tea contain no diuretics.

I personally count it as water. I look at it like this, you start with water, and you add something to the water. It doesn't stop being water because you added something to it.

I mean, if you drank the water straight and then a moment later decided to munch on a teabag for some weird reason, you would still count the water as water, right?

If you're worried, drink the extra, but I personally don't think its that big of an issue.

    I agree!
  • They do consider tea to be a diuretic, just like coffee...because they elevate the rate of urination. But, both do have caffeine. Caffeine is also a diuretic which will help you to loose water weight. They say you should limit yourself to only one source of caffeine.
Maybe you should try drinking one glass of tea to one glass of pure water!?! The caffeine is good to help with energy levels and to get you through workouts, even the day. But, I think pure water helps flush your system.
From what I read there is no comparison or substitute for pure water. I, myself, have to add a packet of Crystal Light to get through 5-6 bottles of water a day.

    Hope this helps...

green tea does have caffeine unless you get decaf.

Thanks for the help everyone! I think I will still drink the water in addition to the tea. Even if tea is water with flavor/caffeine.....too much water can't be bad right!?

When I was in Weight Watchers last year, they said that tea and coffee can count for up to 2 of your waters per day as long as they are decaf. Tea and coffee with caffeine doesn't count.

I don't count coffee and tea as part of my water intake for the day.

I log them separately in my meal log when I have them too.

Water = water, IMHO. On top of any coffee and tea I might have, I also drink about 3-4 liters of pure water each day.
