DH and I want to take a relaxing vacation. We're thinking about a small rustic cabin nestled in the woods (state park?) with hiking/walking and bike trails nearby and maybe a lake to go canoing. We don't want to travel too far from home but we really don't know where to go. We live in central TX and would be willing to travel around hrs or so. Any suggestions?

Replies

  • Go somewhere that isn't as hot as Texas! HAHA
  • Lots of lakes in TX. Texoma, Texarkana, Possum Kingdom (if it's even still there)... etc etc. They usually got lil cabins and stuff you can rent or could try camping. Canoeing is fun as heck too. Ooh... Six Flags... lots of walking and adrenaline. I lived in Abilene and that's the kind of stuff we would do as a family.

We like to fly in to a new area and just spend several days bumming around. Grab the cheapest rental car and a ditty bag and go.

Hit the smalltown museums, the wierd roadside stuff,,, eat in diners, stay in mom&pop fleabag motels. Meet people, have fun. Not really that expensive if you can keep the souveneir shopping under control.

We did Vermont last fall,,, hoping to get to Seattle this fall.

I meant to say we would be willing to drive 12-18 hrs. or so. Anyone know of any specific spots, say in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri?

If you willing to drive that far, the Smokey Mountains in TN would be fantastic.

Anywhere specifically? I'm not familiar with the area.

Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Very touristy areas. Very rustic. BEAUTIFUL.

I don't know how far Blowing Rock, NC is from you but it's a quaint little mountain town (touristy area).

We stayed in a cabin outside of Gatlinburg, had all the thrills of the "Tourist Traps" and still were able to also go some days and enjoy nature with things like hiking, zip lining, white water rafting etc.

When you get on the site, you can pick how many bedrooms you want in a cabin.

We just got back from Eureka Springs, AR . There are several rivers that you can canoe down, and lots of cabins to stay in. Right around 7 hrs from Dallas and about an hour from Branson
