Does weight loss affect menstrual cycle?!

Hi all,

So i'm on the contraceptive pill marvelon. I've been on it about 9 months and not had any problems. But last month my period was 2 days early (literally came on the day after i stopped taking my pill) and my period was shorter/lighter than usual. Now this month i stopped taking my pill last night but started having spotting on monday night...

I finished a week long course of antibiotics last thursday (i've not had sex in the week or week after taking them as i know the pill is ineffective then)...so i guess that could mess with my hormones?!

just worried that my pill is not strong enough for some reason anymore and therefore not effective....?! xxx

    My situation is a little different to yours, so I'm not sure if it'll be of any help at all, but hey :-)

    I went on Cilest for around a year last year 'cause I had really long/painful periods. I made the decision to come off the pill about 5 or 6 months ago and around the same time I decided to lose some pounds. I've noticed that so far, as I've lost weight my periods have gotten shorter and lighter (basically stayed the same as they were whilst I was on the pill). So maybe it's the healthier lifestyle that's keeping them in check.

    As far as your situation, maybe because antibiotics mess around with the contraceptive pill, it might have knocked your cycle a little out of whack. I can't see many reasons why suddenly your pill would just become ineffective, but if I were you I'd see what your next period is like, and maybe take a trip back to your doctor?

    Thank you hun. that is helpful :) i have a doc appointment tomorrow so hopefully that will sort it out for me. I am not pregnant so that is definitely ruled out...just hoping it is the antibiotics and not something more sinister :( thanks again xxx

    My sister (who is extremely overweight) has had issues with her cycle being regular and has to take BC pills to regulate it for her. Her endocrinologist said it was because fat cells hold on to estrogen, which if the levels get high enough (like in my sister's situation) the pituitary gland stops producing those hormones needed for your monthly cycle.

    I don't know if this is the case for you, but I did notice a little irregularity when I started exercising and I chalked it up to my body burning the fat and thus releasing the estrogen. But I'm not a doctor...

    The only time mine was affected in the past was when I wasn't eating enough and then it would be light. Good thing you're going to the doctor because there are so many different things it could be, including stress, the pill, and other medications you might be taking.

    I was on antibiotics last month during mine and it was only 1 and a half days when mine is usually like 6 or 7. I did some research and the antibiotics mess with your hormones quite a bit so I think that could be part of it. I also find that when I am excercising more that mine are a lot lighter.
