Tight Hips

I have a question regarding tight hips. My fitness level is increasing by leaps and bounds as I continue to lose weight through exercise and eating healthy. However, one area I'm struggling with is the flexibility of my hips. I don't notice it so much during normal daily activity. I notice it the most during intercourse with my partner. It's as if I am struggling to spread my legs wide enough and still be comfortable for the long haul (usually around 40+min!). Now, before someone builds the nerve to ask, no my man is not a wide load. He is 5'11" and roughly 185lbs. It's just my tight hips!
My workout regimine consists mainly of Turbo Fire followed by stretching (typically the program's Stretch 10), walking, and jogging.
What can a girl do?? All advise is welcome!

Lay on the floor with your knees bent, cross one ankle over the other knee, grab your upper thigh and pull the knee towards you. GREAT stretch for that area! Hope it works :-)0

Adding in a few minutes of foam roller work to any stretching that you do might help also. Also, not just for this issue but just in general, don't just concentrate on the one problem area. Additional flexibility throughout the area from your waist to your knees (glutes, quads, IT bands, TFL, etc.) will only help.0

^^ what that poster said..
Also, go to youtube and type in defranco flexibility and follow some of those youtube videos as needed.0 -
Lie on your back. Put the soles of your feet together. Let your knees spread out.
Hatha yoga would really help. There are lots of hip opening stretches.
Changing position during intercourse would help too. My hubs also is a long lasting kind of guy and an hour or more in the same position would be hard on anyone.0 -
Stretching every day should loosen them up, until then there always are different positions?0

consult a doctor or a fitness instructor on good ways to stretch those muscles.0

Yoga. Google "Hip Opener Stretches" you will get all sorts of results/videos of stretches just for your predicament.0

Agree with everyone one else that stretching is important.
I am like you and I have a limited range of motion in my hips...I can't even bring my knee to my chest when lying down. I stretch and stretch but within 12hrs I am right back to where I was. So I have to stretch A LOT.
Other than your 40+ min dilema It can affect you if you are exercising a lot as you say your fitness is growing by leaps and bounds (way to go BTW). I am training for a 1/2 marathon and my hips have caused tendonitis in my ankle...the motion of running is pulling all the way down my leg and causing the tendon to rub weird in my foot. Not to mention is pulling my lower back out of alignment and causing "dead leg" when I run 3+ miles straight.
I have a PT appt on Friday to see what the recommend...I hope they take it seriously. In the military they seem to just want to get you sorta fixed so you quit complaining and turn you lose.0 -
Tell him to work faster then!!! hehehe0

Good grief, Brandi! Hahahahahaha! Shoulda stopped after I read your warning! Anway, I agree with the foam roller, the butterfly stretch, the butt stretch, all great ideas. But something I did while pregnant to help open hips/pelvis was a real deep squat. Knees and toes pointed out at an angle and get our butt down to the floor (or as low as you can) spreading your knees as you do. Good luck!0

I had the same problem ...
Lateral Lunges gets my hip(s) flexible enough for anything:blushing:0 -
good lord 40 minutes?! dont y'all have jobs to go to?
anyway butterfly stretch is good, also hip strengtheners like post parallel squats will help
you can also try different positions0 -
40 minutes is good! Sex is exercise!
OK-down to business. YOGA will help you so much to open those hips. I'm a yoga instructor. Feel free to add me and i can send you poses to try to loosen them up.
Best of luck!0 -
I have the same problem and also have a guy that takes forever and that is not always a good thing.. LOL.. I got **** to do.
I have heard good things about foam rollers and you can find videos on You tube.0 -
Thanks for the advice and the laughs everyone! Now I just need to figure out where to fit more stretching and/or yoga into my daily schedule! I'll figure it out, this is important! Thanks all!0
