Ok, im a stay at home mom that babysits. I watch (2) almost three year olds. One of them is in underwear, tells me when he has to go potty, acts like a normal almost three year old.

The other one i watch still comes with a binky (i make him keep it in his bag when he is here) has to carry a "blankey" everywhere and can't keep toys out of his mouth. His mother wonders why he isn't getting the idea of going in the potty.......

Well, treat him like a baby and he will act like a baby!!!!! Its frustrating for me when he comes one day in a pull up and the next day in a diaper.

I used to get bent out of shape about other peoples kids and thier bad habits but after having a kid with special needs I have a different take on it. All kids are different, even those without special needs and eventually we all grow up. The diaper stage might take some kids a bit longer to get out of, but he will get out of it.

My 2 (3 in October) year old potties, but he also has a blankie and a paci for nap time and bed time.

He also can count, say he ABC's, recognize all letters, numbers, shapes, colors, etc.

He is above average in most areas.. and having a blankie and paci didn't hinder him.

I think its a matter of some kids needing that comfort.. it's not a bad thing.. unless they have it in their mouths 24/7 and it hinders speech.

ETA: I do agree with the diaper/pullup thing though.. I think its confusing. We made the leap to big boy undies one day and never looked back.. its too hard on them going back and forth.

I get what you mean I have 3 kids of my own and my kids are very independent and all potty trained by 2.5 years. Ages 6,4,2 friends of mine ask me for advice. I had a friend asking me help her train her 3 yo. I said some things to her that may have bothered her. One was have to stop treating her like a baby. No need to carry her around or baby talk her. She's gets what she wants all the time and still doesn't talk. She's a healthy child but is super babied I mean carried everywhere, fed EVERYTHING in the mouth by mommy and still eats baby cereal and lots of gerber foods. Why i dont know shes three.I have a sister who is special needs and I understand they are the exception. All my kids have a blankie they only need to sleep with that is it....I might be a little hard but I am not lugging 3 blankets around with me all the time to run errands. My 2 older one I took the pack away at 1yo my youngest uses her thumb only to fall asleep sometimes now because we constantly remind her no thumb in the mouth (she tried for a while to have her thumb in her mouth all the time it was the first thing she did after being born.

I was able to wean my children from bottles/ pacifiers by the time they were 1.5. I believe that when they are able to form complete sentences they shouldn't have a pacifier in their mouths. What's the point? Comfort? No...its a habit. A bad one. His teeth are already starting to show the effects of it. I would understand if he did have special needs, but he doesn't. His mother pops it in his mouth anytime he starts crying/ throwing a fit for something. Its not for him, its for her. He also knows some ABC, knows how to count to some degree and is very intuitive. When he can audibly say "I pooped my pullup" he needs to 1. not have a pacifier in his mouth when he says it and 2. be using the potty.
