I go back to this frequently for all kinds of sound advice. Just another arrow in your quiver...

Respectfully, I am suspicious of anything the FDA prints.
It is "owned" by large pharamaceutical companies like Monsanto.
The same Monsanto who is "donating" suicide seed to 3d World Nations in their effort to control the world's food supply.
This is the same Monsanto supported FDA that approved dangerous drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex without proper testing. It is the same FDA that is approving an HPV virus vaccination for your female children without proper testing.
An older (70's) nurse once told gave me some great advice that went like this:
"DO NOT take ANY medications that have not been on the market at least 10 years"
The reason? There is no WAY of knowing how harmful they are until the HUMAN population is taking them. And testing on humans is not included in the FDA's reports, for the most part.
When you read all of that propaganda called "scientific testing" it might be wise to take into consideration WHO PAID FOR THE TEST?
It is my strong belief that my government does not WANT me to be healthy.0 -

I completely agree with you

This is the same FDA that tells us that cloned and genetically engineered (frankenfoods) are fine to consume. Use with CAUTION!

Wow, did you guys even check out the link??? or was that just knee-jerk reaction to "FDA"?? Sorry, I have issues with knee-jerk reactions. I actually went to the link and thought it was interesting and possibly informative to someone who was new to healthy eating. There's nothing to "use". I didn't read every single word, but will go back. But it talkes about nutrient rich foods and now we don't get adequate vitamins and minerals but eat WAY too much fat and sodium, etc. And discusses how to balance that and what foods to eat to increase natural vitamin and mineral consumption. How could you truely have an issue with that? JMO. - Kim0

I understand that you might not like knee-jerk reactions, and I'll admit maybe I had one.
But I also DID read the website and don't agree with a lot of the information.
I don't agree with the caution against eggs.
I don't agree with pasturizing milk.
I pretty much don't read anything put out by them.
I guess it's difficult for me to trust an agency with such a bad record.
Sorry if you were offended.0 -
RowanC Yep....I agree...:drinker:

Out of all the good information you had issues with 2 - actually that I didn't even notice. I understand your issues, but the overall gist of the article is good information. Especially if you are looking for lists of food with certain nutrients, and foods to eat that are naturally lower in calories and more nutritionally dense. I guess - don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. I haven't read an article on nutrition that I 100% agree with EVERY thing they say, but there is a lot of good info out there. Put a disclaimer on it if you feel strongly about something they say, but don't blow off good info just because of 1 or 2 things. JMO!
Not offended Rowan - just felt you all came out really strongly when there was a lot of good info there that could help some people.0 -
I scanned it. While I tend to distrust government agencies because of the lobbist community and special interest groups; I don't believe the USDA is has any agenda bent on destroying America. There are some good facts in there, and from what I have been able to gleen by checking independant sources. Although the site is pretty vanilla about it's recommendations, I haven't yet seen anything in there that sounded bad as of yet (it's a lot of info and I've only read about 1/4 of it so far). I was able to find the part about milk and eggs that RowanC was talking about, but to be fair, they were talking about how to avoid microbial food born illness, and in that respect, they are right on.
here is the section.

Not that I don't see the advantages of raw milk, there are quite a few, but there are also a lot of myths out there about raw vs. pasturized milk on both sides of the fence.
NOW, all that being said, I would ALWAYS recommend checking your facts with multiple, reputable, sources. I almost always check in with WebMD when I look something up, as they have multiple MD's on staff they employ as "fact checkers" and editors, all of whom have very good credentials in the medical community.0 -
Spot on Banks - Thanks for the balanced input! There is a lot of info in that article to review and double checking is always good.0

Interesting! It is ONE arrow in your quiver. Varied sources are good. Nothing is engraved in stone and certainly we all make our choices.
I came out of the bio-genetics field and agree that the FDA has no idea when it comes to pharmaceuticals. It is mostly about money, and the drug companies have it in excess, and (I know for a fact) they skew their findings. So the drug companies are the bad guys as far as I am concerned. There is not enough time in the day to tell you what I know about the FDA's errors in that area. But I don't think it's maliciously intended.
I didn't send you to a "Drug" FDA website (pharmaceuticals) - just a nutrient-intake recommendation. The charts are easy-to-read.
MFP has some errors in judgement, too: as we all have discovered. Arm yourself with a wide variety of resources, and as always, make your best decisions.

I think the original post was just a note to let all of us know another site to check information. The FDA hasn't had the best track record but they haven't exactly poisoned all of us either. The overall point is that we all need to use our brains and do additional research on information regarding our health because, as we all know, whats going to kill us today will have some miraculous health benefit tomorrow!0

That would be a really interesting conversation!
My comments were not in any way aimed at you. And you are right, It was a knee jerk reaction to a comment about the FDA. I have serious issues about food safety and the FDA, and so you got caught in the crossfire...I'm sorry about that. That'll teach me to just pop off!

Sometimes popping off is good, not meant to offend but to get a strong opinion out there is always welcome in my book! And you are right too, the FDA has a lot to learn as well as the "scientists" that tell us what is good or bad for us, we all need to read and get balanced opinions before diving into "diets" so we can make the best choices for us personally!0 -

Cowboy, no offense taken! I'm often the first one to "pop off". You should have known me before we could EDIT our comments! Lively debate is good.
Carry on, everyone!
