heres the thing. i am muslim and we are coming up on the month of ramadan. this is when we dont eat from sun up to sun down. now my thing is that i did not want to drop my caloric intake by too much because i know i will start to gain weight. What are some suggestions you guys can help me with what to eat in the morning before fasting starts. the evenings are really not a problem, its just that i want to make sure i stay at least in the 1200-1300 range. My net calorie intake is 1540. any help would be appreciated thanks.

I have a multigrain english muffin with eggs for breakfast and that fills me up til lunch... your going longer than that but I think this would help as a start, maybe have 2 and add some yogurt... good luck  I tried to do it with my friend when I was going to eat dinner at her house that night, I couldn't make it! (this was about 6 years ago though) I really respect what your doing though

Eat a ton of protein and fober in the morning, that way it will last you the rest of the day. Meat and eggs are always a good filler.0

I observed Ramadan when I lived/worked in Saudi, but it's tough when you're dieting (it's tough when you're NOT). I'd get up before sunrise and eat a hearty breakfast (at least 1/2 your calories) and then eat the other half with the evening meal/celebration. I know there was a lot of eating going on at night, so staying in your range might be difficult0

Though I am not Muslim, a member of my family is. How early do you get up during Ramadan? I know he gets up well before sunrise and has a good breakfast. I agree with what Alicia and others suggested. Eggs or some other protein will help stave off hunger for a while combined with some complex carbs. It's too bad you can't have water throughout the day to help fill your stomach. I also respect what you're doing. I tried it just for a few days, nevermind a month0

I don't know all the details about what you can and can't do. However, I remember reading an article written by a person that was going through a period of ritual fasting similar to my understanding of Ramadaan. What sticks with me is that this person said it was better to eat "light" meals rather than trying to pack all your calories into one meal. Heavier meals made that person more hungry during the day.
One thing I really like, and it fills me up is hard boiled eggs, hummus (I like the roasted red pepper flavor) and whole grain bread. Not sure if all of this is Halal (sp?) but, you should be able to come up with a version that is appropriate. Good luck. Fasting is difficult.0 -
My neighbor from my last home is Muslim, she was concerned for her children as well during Ramadan. She prepared large fiber rich protein filled meals that were eaten before sun rise and again after sunset! Multi vitamins were used to insure proper nutrient levels also. Respecting your religion is very important in any faith. Fare well and eat large nourishing meals before sunrise!0

Also, If you don't want a large meal in the morning, you might consider a good high protein shake, with a light meal. I read an article that said that things like soup and shakes actually help because they stay in the stomache longer, and take longer to digest. Good Luck!0

WOW! great responses and thank you for the encouragment. I have been practicing islam for about five yrs. now and you would think that fasting would get easier but it doesnt. i understand the benefit of fasting so that helps. its only rough during the first wk. then your body adjusts and it gets easier. so thank you again for the responses. great ideas.0

I did ramadan for 5 years and I always ended up gaining weight, but then in the in-law's family the tradition was to eat heavy, greasy and very sweet foods in the evening. I think the other suggestions are great -- lots of protein and complex carbs. I know how tough it is -- good luck!0
