Calorie Formulas vs machine display?

I did a 30 minute elliptical work out on a precor 546 elliptical set at 5 crossramp and 5 resistance and went 2.11 miles with a AVG 149 hreart rate. My weight before work out was 275.2 and I am 35 years old.

MFP says I burned 561 calories

The formula that uses avg heart rate, weight, age and time says I burned 507.89 calories

The running formula based on weight and distance says I burned 439.14 calories

The machine says I burned 384 calories

Which one should I use because there is a big diferance between all of these numbers?

If a machine can let you input your weight, then I use the machine calorie burn (otherwise I think they default to a 150lb person doing the workout). The machine will calculate calorie burn based on incline, resistance, speed, duration and weight.

I don't know if MFP calculates the calorie burn based on your current weight, someone else may know this answer.

Not sure which formulas you are using, so can't comment on those either. But I'd love to know where you found them, to compare some of my workouts!

Sorry if I didn't help as much as you'd hoped.

I did input my weight and age in Elliptical

The formula that uses avg heart rate, weight, age and time:
    men: Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.2017) -- (Weight x 0.09036) + (Heart Rate x 0.6309) -- 55.0969] x Time / 4.184
    woman: Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.074) -- (Weight x 0.05741) + (Heart Rate x 0.4472) -- 20.4022] x Time / 4.184.

Running formula based on distance and weight:
    calories = kilometers x kilograms x 1.036

The machine is prob the most accurate one. And even that would still be high as it includes your BMR which is about 60-90 calories.

I use a stationary bike which allows me to input my weight and height, it also has 15 resistance modes.....according to it I use almost 15 cals per minute when I'm riding along at quite a sedate pace, with not much resistance....my HRM says I'm using 5 cals per minute.....I know that even HRM's can be slightly out but I would trust my HRM every time against my bike. I would not trust MFP as their formula doesn't appear to take into account your personal details and is just an across the board figure

I've never used an Elliptical so I don't know if it has different resistant modes, but if it does that needs to be taken into account also. I have just started working out at my local gym and when I asked them about the difference between my HRM and bike cals they told me to go by my HRM but that there may be a 10% accuracy difference.....even so that means that I am only using 5.5 cals per minute.

Never used a calorie formula but may try just to see...good luck :)

My fear with the machine is like it will shows me between 120 to 180 strides per minute depending if I am pushing or fat burning and it has a 18" stride but like the sesson I posted in this post I went 30 minutes and traveled 2.11 miles. There is 63360 inches in a mile. So ((63360 inches / 18" stride) * 2.11 miles) / 30 minutes = 247.57 strides per minute.

So if the heart rate sensors are not accarate as a Heart rate Chest monitor and the strides per minute are off it makes me feal that I can not trust the machine at all. Also the machines calories are allways way under all teh other formulas even the calculators for the machine its self.
