I've used the phone application off and on for a few years. I would always stop after a few weeks because of my frustration at how much time I was spending trying to figure out how to add what I ate. I make a lot of food from scratch and I don't make the same thing every week. When I'm not cooking, my husband is or I’m at a small restaurant that does not provide nutritional information. With my own cooking I have to guess what food listed might be similar or I list all the ingredients and calculate what went into my portion. When someone else cooks, I ask what was in the food or pick a listed food that is similar. With the restaurant, I just pick another restaurant to log that has similar food and adjust based on how much of a difference I think there was. It’s all very frustrating at times. The full web version of the site does make it a little easier though and I’ve had a little more success now that I’m using it. The culture where I work is one where healthy habits are encouraged, so spending a few minutes logging into a fitness site like this one is acceptable and even slightly encouraged.
Calorie counting and reduction has been the only way I’ve been able to lose weight. Throw studies and theories at me all you want. I’m a person, not a number. Heavy exercise has always caused me to gain a little weight and larger measurement sizes while eating the same. Moderate exercise combined with calorie reduction seems to work best for me.
I’m not looking for a perfect BMI. Just a body that isn’t a burden to carry around all day while I do all the things I want or need to do. I’m obese but I’m pretty active outside of my day job. My other health stats like BP, BS, Cholesterol, etc. are all normal despite my weight. My thyroid count is on the low side of normal so it may be causing me a slight problem.
What else? I garden, camp, cook, bee keep, keep chickens, can foods, bake, work full time as an IT professional, occasionally do volunteer work, and read. I’m also married and have two young children.
