People use it to "push" a topic back to the top of the list. When something new is posted to a string, it places at the top.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump

To bump a thread on an internet forum is to post a reply to it purely in order to raise the thread's profile. This will typically return it to the top of the list of active threads. It has been suggested that "bump" is an acronym of "bring up my post";[1] however, this is almost certainly a backronym and the usage is entirely consistent with the verb "bump" which means "to knock to a new position"

It is also used for when people what to read a thread later. Then they can find it on their profile posts and go back to the thread and read without having to do a search, and/or remember the topic title.
  • whatever topic is getting the most comments is moved to the top of the list if people feel like its a great topic the simply type "bump" to ensure that it stays at the top of the list

I "bump" when I see a recipe or some info that I don't want to have to look for later. Bumping will "save" the thread under "My Topics" so that I can readily find it later

here on MFP it does 2 things, notice the threads are sorted by most recent activity, bump contibutes a post to the thread bringing it up through the order to "most recent" for viewing of others, but also, due to MFPs set up, it "flags" the thread in "my topics" so you can come back and read it later. But when that happens you can wind up with 15 pages of nothing but BUMP with what could have been an interesting topic other than having to page through all those "saves for later" which most of us could do by bookmarking the thread and coming back at our convenience.

It is by time-stamp, that the threads here are sorted, not by responses.

A bump can mean many things....

    A "baby bump"

    A "bump on the wrist"

    I "bump you"

I am "bumping in my car"

    ..........etc

I hope you can understand what it means now..
