Thank you for approaching this topic in a sensitive manner.
Thankfully, MFP will soon be moderating "pro-ana/mia" groups and such on here so it will be a healthier environment. They are working really hard on it which is great news.
Please, visit http://www.somethingfishy.org. It is incredible and has information and resources from everyone to eating disorder sufferers to friends and family.
Also, I made some blog posts last month about this and posted some key information from SomethingFishy. Please, have a look and spread it around! http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/sarahkatara?month=201205
I run a recovery-focused blog too. Feel free to follow. tumbleintorecoverywithme.tumblr.com
Recovery is possible. Even for the worst. I'm living proof.
you are such an inspiration0 -
That was the perfect post to broach this topic. I think it's really important that anyone on here who is suffering from one of these diseases knows there are plenty of us here who will support them in recovery as well. That we want nothing more than for them to get well.0

I can not love this more than I do, Well said!0

"You aren't talking about me. I do eat, I just don't eat like a pig like most people. Who are you to say I don't eat enough. And I have more energy than anyone I know. I can go on 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night. I can run 6 miles at a great pace and still feel freaking fantastic. Can you say that? And your BS about cognitive abilities, is just that, BS. I think just fine, those A's prove it. Don't worry about that sniffle, it's just allergies."
From 8 - late twenties I would have said the above. The issue is people with anorexia often do not see themselves as having a problem.
Here's the deal, not that it will convince anyone to start eating healthy. You get "colds" all the time because your body doesn't have nutrients to fight off disease. You don't want to end up with an immune system disorder (I did). You want to grow as tall as you were meant to (I'm the shortest in my family @ 5'1" other than 1 previously anorexic aunt). You don't have energy. You have food deprivation insomnia. You are running yourself to death. Your muscles can barely pump your blood much less make your body move for 6 miles at 8 minutes a freaking mile. You don't want to have a heart attack at 35 (I did). You think your cognitive abilities are good now, how about adding some more protein to your diet and seeing how that changes. Because eventually your brain will be effected, more than you know. You'll start to have to write everything down when you used to be able to remember everything written, said, or experienced.
I guess my point is, it's a great sentiment, but most likely lost on those who most need it.0 -
Wish we could sticky this.0

Ugh... so sorry you had to go through all of this. The hardest part is that they really don't realize there's a problem. The more you try to say, You Are Worth It, You Are Beautiful, You Deserve Better - it all slips through the cracks.
Times spent drowning in self esteem issues can be some of the most isolating, frigid times of your life. You feel worthless, like a bother to everyone. I think most people have been there at some point in their lives. This is only a portion of the issue ... but for all those going through it, I'd say - wake up, look in the mirror, and, even if you don't believe it, every day, tell yourself.
I Am Beautiful. I Am Worth It. I Deserve Only the Best.
And walk on. ♥0 -
It's really sad that so many people today think that if you are skin and bones that means you are pretty and sexy. What we see on TV, in movies and in magazines unfortunately fuels a lot of this thinking.
FYI.....those magazines are AIRBRUSHED.....those celebrities don't look like that and some of them are starting to fight back and are posting what the pics originally looked like.
FYI.....those runway models are NOT healthy and different companies are now starting not to hire them because they are portraying something that is not good or healthy to themselves of the people watching them.
FYI.....men....it is a rarity to find a woman who is built like Barbie (bigger boobs usually come with a little more all the way around......OP excluded from this!!!) Surgery is not for everyone and women shouldn't feel like they need big boobs to be attractive.
FYI.....children do sometimes cause flabby tummies and extra skin. They are worth it and shouldn't detract from a woman being considered beautiful.
Please, young people.....skinny does not mean beautiful or sexy or always healthy. Focus on being healthy and you will be found as sexy!!!
I agree with all of this!0 -
Amen!
I used to be scared of food, now I know it's the fuel that keeps my body running (the only body you'll ever get btw so treat it good!)
I just know now the better options to pick.0 -
I really love this post. Thank you. I see these girls a lot too. They add me often. I can't keep them around though..... I wish I could help them, but most of them do not seem ready for help. And I am not yet strong enough to not feel urges when I see them and their diaries and the way that they boost one another. I actually saw one screen name on here that spelled "anorexic" just with some letters replaced with numbers and symbols. I don't even know if it angered me or saddened me more when I read her profile. I even post the occasional warning on my status not to be offended if I remove you because I felt like you were a danger to my recovery... I so wish these girls would realize now what they are doing..... Not wait til they are in their 30's with heart problems plus others like myself, and a post I saw a few above mine.0

Good post. I blame society in general on this. Shame on them make girls think they need to weigh 90 pounds to be considered thin reward on this fact. Then on the other side there starting to encourage Fat Tolerance. Its down right crazy but you have to realize this its about MONEY.0
