Bloodwork back, now what

Since I have gained so much despite eating right, dieting and even completing basic military training, I had my thyroid checked (AGAIN). Again, it came back normal (still waiting on estrogene results). Even my doctor said have gained a significant amount in the last 9 months (40+lbs) but didn't give me any suggestions on what else could be wrong. I had to ask for the specific test to check thyroid and estrogen. What should I ask to check next since the dr isn't any help? There has to be something medically wrong. I have done everything right according to the doctor and dietician and I am still gaining (it isn't muscle because it is all in the waist area)

Has he done a complete hormone panel? Checked your insulin levels?

I know I gained 30 pounds in about 9 months when I first started having problems with PCOS.

Yes get. Fasting insulin challenge. Get an ultrasound of your ovaries.

Do you know your thyroid results? Also have them test for anti-thyroid antibodies. With Hashimotos, your ATA will be positive before your clinically hypothyroid.

I know it says no thyroid issues, but I'd still add some seaweed (the kind that has natural occuring iodine for the thyroid) to my diet for a while just for grins (why not?).

Here's my personal experience with sudden/unexplained weight gain:
Hypoglycemic during my pregnancy: I gained a boatload of weight over two months and there was little I could do.

Diabetes: Main symptoms were weight gain (the doc said any extreme up/down should be checked) and exhaustion.

Peri-menopause: I'm a 42 yo female and am peri (GYN diagnosed it). It's a b*tch losing weight. I had to go on a 1000 cal a day diet and do metabolism boosting mini-exercises throughout the day to lose. It works, but the weight comes off .5 - 1 a week when it should be coming off in pounds according to MFP.

Steroids: (I know this probably doesn't apply, but it was a reason I gained). I gained weight on them and even when I got off them for about a month. I also had a wicked reaction to them. And it was really hard to lose it again once it was on.

Stress: Not because I'm eating. But when I'm stressed I gain sometimes even if I'm eating very little.

Beta Blockers for my Hypertension: Cause me to gain weight. Who knows why. I couldn't find a good reason.

    Best of luck.

If the doctor isn't any help you should find a new doctor, or an additional doctor. Clearly something is not added up, and you should get to the bottom of it.

Try cutting all wheat products out of your diet for a couple of weeks and see if that makes a difference. I gained 65 pounds very rapidly and had all kinds of test to no avail...then I start noting what I ate everyday and how it made me feel. I realized very quickly that wheat products made me feel bloated and caused stomach discomfort. I cut it out of my diet and very quickly started feeling so much better and the pounds started to drop off.

If you get a chance read a book called "Wheat Belly"...or google it even. It may shed some light on your situation.

I'd definately ask your doc about gluten intolerant. I have a friend who's gluten intolerant. Now that she's cut out gluten, she's lost probably 30 pounds doing nothing (over 1 year). I wouldn't assume this is it, but it is another possibility (so many out there).
