Week one step at a time...

A friend of mine turned me on to this site, so my family (wife and daughter) and I decided to give it a try. We had to do something. We'd grown accustom to eating out more than not, and it is definitely showing.
Here’s my thoughts week one...
Last Thursday, we set the goal of just logging what we ate and attempting to drink the 8 cups of water. One step at a time. I “was” a Starbucks in the morning person that skipped lunch only to follow it up with a hardy helping of dinner (usually fast food). I couldn't remember the last glass of water I had.
So, logging the calories on MyFitnessPal has turned into kind of a daily family game. Love the phone app. It seems like none of us are eating anything without checking the calories. Which is a good step. It's sort of weird knowing what a serving size is now :}
It didn't take long to see the fast food wasn't going to keep me under my calorie goal. So we tried working in what we consider healthier foods, lots of fruits and veggies, and sticking to proper portion sizes. We’ve also started eating breakfast, snack , lunch, snack, and dinner. We've been able to keep close to our calorie goal every day this week. I've been able to get 6 cups of water in a day, but that's about it.
It's been a week, and the scale is going in the right direction. Surprisingly more than I thought, but everyone says not to get too excited…it’s water weight. Whatever that is, I’m happy for now. One change I’ve noticed is I’m a starving crazy person come dinner time now??
Anyway…love the site, like reading the forums and learning more.

That's so cool -- doing it as a family! And you're right, merely tracking and understanding the calories you're taking in can make a huge difference. "Is this can of soda pop really WORTH adding an extra 15 minutes to my workout? Nawwwwww...."
Way to go! Keep us updated on how things go!0
