Let's add this one to the "never in my life would I have imagined" list.

Ten months ago, I signed up for a "learn to row" class at a local boathouse. I thought it would be fun, and it would be neat to see my city from the water instead of from land. When the class ended, I joined the intermediate class, to see what would happen. We rowed at 5am M-W-F, in all weather except for heavy wind. Somehow, the routine stuck. In the intervening months, not only have I lost 25 lbs (with the help of MFP), I've also dropped a minute and a half off my mile time, and have increased my longest run time from about 25 minutes to over 50!

Three weeks ago, the boathouse cancelled our intermediate class, so I looked around for other groups to join. Wednesday morning was my first morning rowing with a COMPETITIVE team. It was tough, but I kept up! I'll now be rowing with them for the forseeable future.

This is unbelievable to me. Never in my life have I thought of myself as an athlete. And now, after a year of working my butt off, here I am! I've been thinking over the last several weeks that each of us can't control our genes -- we can't control whether we're tall or muscular or naturally lithe. But, we CAN control whether we are athletes, and that being an athlete is within reach for anyone, with enough hard work.

Hooray for me!

Great work! I'm looking into rowing classes myself, but I have to say it's a bit intimidating!!
  • Great to hear, we're looking for members in the MFP Rowing Group if you are interested ... the more the merrier!

Way to go! It's such a great workout! One of the best team sports out there I think. Everyone has to help each other to keep the boat moving.

In college my roommate asked me to come to an informational meeting with her about the beginning rowing team. The coach saw how short and little I was (this was 30 lbs ago) and automatically asked me to be the coxswain. I was horrible at it! Too meek to really inspire the team. I lasted one season, but I can say I did a NCAA division I sport :)
