Do you need a cell phone contract for an iPod Touch?

I was looking into the iPod Touch. It has a ton of features, and I didn't think you needed a contract, that it just used 3G or Wifi (like a Kindle). But, I saw that it has other features like texting and video calling - so now I'm not so sure...

How does it work?

My daughter has one, no cell phone contract needed, just wifi and an email address. When she's connected to wifi, she can text other iphone/ipod users and also Facetime with other iphone/ipod users. Facetime requires even the iphone to be connected to wifi. So it's exactly like an iphone with no phone :)

Unless they've changed the Touch in the past year or so, it's wifi only and doesn't require a contract.

the texting and video calling are tied to the user's "Apple ID" - usually their email address - and are sent over wifi.

my brother has an iphone and ipad (ipad is wifi only) and when i send him a text, since both devices have the same Apple ID associated with it, he gets the text on both his phone and his ipad.

    I hope that helps.

Thanks all! I was kind of hoping that the iPod Touch used 3G like the Kindle Touch, but I guess it's wifi only. So...I will have to get real internet for the house in order for it to work, instead of using internet through my cell phone.

Was thinking of getting one for my daughter so she'd stop stealing my phone and running the battery down! lol!
