I have been out of town this week and it's really messed up my momentum as well as my diet goals... How does everyone else avoid this frustration?

Plan ahead..... drink lots of water, stay places that have fitness centers, walk a lot, make healthier selections when going out to eat.
That being said, you're on vacation and should be able to enjoy yourself, too.....0 -
I am worried about that too when i go to Cancun in a few weeks. Its all inclusive and why the heck would I want to work out with a beach so close by! lol0

When I go on vacation I eat whatever, then come back and get back at it.0

As I am planning two trips for the next few months I've worried about this exact problem. The first trip I'll be in NYC at a hotel so I plan to at least use the treadmill (basics) for the few days I'm there and still monitor my eating maybe more than I would at home. The second trip is a cruise and they have good gyms so that won't be a problem, I hope.
Just planning ahead knowing what's available in terms of working out, for ME is best. As far as eating I do not intent (road to hell right lol ) to over indulge as it's harder to get back on the wagon afterwards, again for ME.0 -

I know how you feel, just be careful because, it's easy to put the weight on. I put 6 lbs on in 2 two week and now working to get it off. It wasn't worth it too me. I shouldn't of done it0

I went to Hawaii in September, for some reason I was never hungry when I was there so I barely ate, I think a granola bar for breakfast, and either a good late lunch or a nice dinner, we never worked out in the fitness center, but we did tons of excursions. When I arrived back, I had actually lost about 4 lbs.0

I still tracked. I bumped up my calories to maintenance, ate mostly bad and drank water with almost all meals. I also walked everywhere. Last year I went to San Diego to visit friends for 1½ weeks. Lost 7 lbs.0

When we go on vacation I plan to get a portable DVD player so I can do my walks every day. I also plan to stick to my calorie plan. I REFUSE to go off track, then have to work even harder once back to get back on track.0

What others have said about planning ahead is important. Find out ahead of time, to whatever extent possible, what your eating options might be--for example, if your hotel includes breakfast, what do they offer? Bring appropriate energy bars, etc. to eat instead of bagels, if that's all they have. If you know you'll be going to particular restaurants in the area, try to look up their menus and figure out what would be best.
Be aware that your sodium intake might increase a lot and you may come back with a bit of water weight (this recently happened to me). That should go away pretty quickly once you're back on your regular routine.
And practice portion control!0 -
I was on vacation last week, I just enjoyed myself and didn't worry about it. I came home, and just hopped right back on track the next day.0

I have been thinking about this whole summer. Because I have a planned weekend away next weekend. A week's vacation in July and a long weekend in August out of town.
I know the week's vacation, I always get a lot of walking in on the beach in the mornings. I might have to add to increase it though and we eat pretty healthy when we are there.
The trip in August, I will be with my best friend who likes to exercise. I am sure we will be able to get exercise in every day and try to eat healthy.
It is my weekend next week that I am worried about. I will be active with kids playing, but not a lot of planned exercises. Try to eat healthy then. I am not going to stress about it completely. I am just going to try to remember.
I have lost most of my weight already, so I am not stressed about it to much.0 -

Why stop just b/c you're on vacation?0 -
Might be the unpopular opinion, but .... Right in the middle of my 'lose weight' regime/plan/diet etc. I went to Disneyworld for two weeks, on the dining plan, followed by a week long Caribbean cruise, where it was all you can eat, 24hrs a day. The first few days I did try to eat better, I chose the salads and turkey sandwiches and low fat dole whip and diet sodas... and then after a few days realised that the salads and turkey sandwiches had little difference in calories and my friends who were eating whatever they wanted were having a much better time than I... so I blew the diet for that three week vacation. I'd been a saint up until that point and was exhausted with trying to be good, so I stopped doing it and enjoyed myself so thoroughly. That's not to say that I pigged out entirely, because I didn't. But you bet I had a cinnamon bun as big as my head from Main Street bakery for breakfast and enjoyed three course meals for dinner on most of the days.
When I got home I stepped straight on the scales to see a 14lb gain, did I panic? Nope. Within a week that had gone completely as most of it would have been water weight etc. and a week after that I saw a few pounds loss. I wanted this to be a lifestyle change, I wanted to know that I could go on holiday, eat whatever I wanted and know that when I got home it was back to normal, and that's exactly what it was. This attitude has since worked on three later holidays, and i'm maintaining at goal weight.
Moral of my story? Enjoy yourself, splurge within reason and get right back on it the day you get home!0 -
Remembering it is a life style not just a diet and exercise. No matter where you are you can exercise and make healthy eating choices.0

i tend to just walk around a ton and eat around a fistful of food every 2-4 hours.
and if i'm not sure i'm getting enough fiber, i eat more fruit and veggies and a couple of fiber one gummies!!0 -
I enjoy my vacation. Real life is waiting for me back at home.0

That was me last month. I too was on a cruise. I found the portions in the dining room to be just right. When I was at the buffet I made sure I added lots of fresh veggies to my plate first. But I still had soft serve and a few drinks almost every day. While I didn't go to the gym, my hubby did - he found it to be qutie busy first thing in the morning.
Try not to stress too much about it. Enjoy yourself! Oh and you'll probably be doing a ton of walking in New York - you won't even need the treadmill!0 -
My husband and I went away for 2 days this week. I was thinking the same thing but we did walk quite a bit so I just decided to relax and enjoy some time alone with my husband.
I did eat carbs but drank only water when out to eat and didn't order dessert.
There is a balance--you can't go crazy but I think learning how to enjoy yourself on a break AND get right back on your game when you get home is good.
One thing I noticed is that the "junk" I used to want doesn't taste so great to me anymore--makes it easier to not eat it;)! Not worth the calories.0 -

That's a great idea! Never thought of bumping to Maintenance. I'll do that next time0
