Why is it that the area termed the Mid-West, still being called the Mid-West? Are people from that area that geographically challenged?

IMHO Chicago is the North Central. But that only my opinion. Chicago is no where near west,it's even on the east side of the Mississippi River. LOL.

I'm originally from Missouri and grew hearing we were in the midwest. I still think of Missouri as part of the midwest.

    It just is!

But it is also recognized as such because:

    1) The Census Bureau said so.
    2) "Though it is geographically in the north, and more eastern than western, the term refers to the fact that the region is midway to the opposite coast when heading directly west from New England and New York, where the term originated. The area is now called the Midwest throughout the English-speaking world."

    Thanks Wikipedia!

I grew up in Wisconsin and that was always considered midwest. Works for me. :)
