Speed or Distance?

I just worked my way up to a 5k today HOOOORRRAYYYY  I ran at 5.2 mph with 2 breaks during the run. Just wondering if I need to continue doing things like that or should I run some speed intervals to get the bigger bang for my buck? I thought about doing the speed thing but I get a side stitch pretty easily if I'm running too fast and they're hard to recover from. Thanks all you runners out there! :flowerforyou:

Never a bad idea to work on speed with intervals, but if you are that sensitive on the side stitch thing, I'd probably just work on the distance until you can run the whole 5K without a break, then start working on the pace. If you are serious about picking up the pace sooner rather than later, go to your local high school track and do drills on the track, like running hard on the straight-aways and jog the turns. You can get your body used to running fast without running too long and getting the side stitch. As you get more comfortable with the pace, do 200 (half a lap) hard , jog 200, and just work yourself up from there. Speed drills once a week, other runs just work on endurance.0
