Post work out shakes made me bigger! Or did they...?

Was it the protein shake after a workout that helped me gain muscle?
Surely it was the creatine doses!
Or perhaps it was my actual weights routine.
Then again, it could've been the fact that I eat 5-6 big meals a day...
I'd like to have a little chat about something called 'Correlation versus Causation'
Because nothing irritates me more than when someone claims it was one single thing that helped them lose weight/gain muscle/get ripped, whatever.
People change their entire lifestyles, then say it was this ONE thing they did, that made them change completely.
No no no, hun, there's a correlation between that one thing and the end result to your body, but it wasn't solely due to that.
If you keep everything else stable, change one thing and one thing in your routine/diet/life then yes, the changes to your body are directly caused by that.
Until then, there's simply a link between that change to the physical changes and your body; perhaps a small link, perhaps a large link.
There's one thing that's always going to be a big variable in your weight loss or weight gain. That's your kcaloric intake. Decreased calorie consumption? That'll generally give you weight loss. Increased consumption? Hey presto, weight gain.
So please, before making claims as to whether 'x' or 'y' actually works, have a think if maybe it's everything else you're doing as well
And don't be afraid to tell someone that, either!
