Weights? I'm ready to start . . . now what?

I've been on MFP for a little over 3 months and I'm dropping weight just watching my calories and walking, but, I'm ready now to add in some weight lifting. I'll be doing this at home, with 3-5-8-12-15 pound free weights. I'm 57.

Any recommendations where I should start? What exercises to do? I'm primarily concerned with core and upper body as the walking is doing some good on my legs already.

I appreciate any suggestions you all can offer.

Do you like books? New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler is the best. There is a 'for women' version, too, but I like the original and think it's applicable to both genders.

I have the book _Strong Women Stay Young_. There is a very basic routine in there consisting of (I think) 7 or 8 exercises, only three of which are for upper body. The exercises use only dumbbells for upperbody, and strap-on ankle weights for lower. I've used this routine in the past, and it might be enough to just get you started.

HOWEVER, I am looking for advice in this area as well, so I will be following responses with great interest.

I'd like some info too.... I have CRAZY bat wind arms, and in addition to getting rid of them, I need to gain some upper body strength!

I'm interested in the advice you get on this too. I was going to start 30 Day shred which has some strength exercises mixed with cardio. I need to change up my cardio some since walking is my main form of exercise right now.

I went to a gym in fact several, many years ago and get some help with doing the exercises,

This assistance is important so that you do not do any damage.

I now have a routine that has been cribbed from the various gyms.
