"In heart rate monitors you shall trust?"

I've started to wear a heart rate monitor when I am working out - the kind that has a band that straps around my chest.
Every morning at 5am, I do a 3-mile walk and I burn around 200 cal. Yesterday, I did this same walk around 11am - I had been up for a couple of hours, reading and had more energy than my usual 5am walks. It said that I burned 400 calories.
My husband says that I was probably more enthused and excited, which spikes up your heart rate. If that's the case, did I really burn and extra 200 calories?

Your hrm calculates your burn based on your heart rate. If first thing in the morning your heart rate is low and stays low, then your burn is going to seem a bit smaller than if your heart rate is higher. For 3 miles, 200 seems a bit on the low side, and 400 seems a bit high.0
