So yeah, that is what is up. I talked myself into going to Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy. Anyone else here been to military school? If so, what is it like? And WHY do the Cadres yell in your face?

Well I haven't been to military school but I was in the Officer Training Corps a few years back. That was a bit of an experience for me as I was pretty darn fat at the time! It was alright, apart from the PT! I found as long as you tried and they saw some improvement in your fitness, then they were decent to you. If you didn't bother then you were in for trouble!
  • I am slightly worried that if one of them gets in my face yelling like i have seen I will punch them in their face...I grew up with a "Don't get in my face" attitude...

I have a feeling that you wont take that swing and, if you DO decide to swing at one, you will VERY quickly wish you had made a batter decision.

LOL...good luck with that. I never even remotely considered the military, as I don't do well with being told what to do...and well, that's kind of the military's schtick.

I think the yelling is supposed to be part of a "tear you down and build you up into something better" process. At least, that's what my marine friends tell me. :)

You get yelled in the face face and confronted so that you know how to handle yourself during moments where choas is around you. You get yelled at so that you can maintain composure when others lose it. If you're concerned about losing your cool, just look at their eyes, and you'll see that their eyes don't match their words...you'll be okay.

I went to one for Jr. college. One of my best experiences. Had my share of getting yelled at, but then, got my chance to yell in my second semester. They want to test your character with the yelling and mental harrasment - just think of it as a game, one that you want to win.

    This ^^^^

If you aren't mentally strong enough to handle a little yelling then you will be unable to maintain yourself in "real bad" situations. It is to train you to switch off your emotions and concentrate when in a chaotic/stressful situation.

I've seen it done and it was over very quickly...and it looked very painful.

I too was raised in a dont get in my face attitude, but military school, will quickly change that for you!!! I will advise you not to swing at a commanding officer because that will ultimately be a mistake. If your not looking for discipline and what ever else comes along with military school, then maybe you should rethink your options. Get a positive attitude about it!!!

My sister went to the Montana Youth Challenge Academy. It was really great for her. I hope you like it and you get what you need out of it.

One of the nice things about having these instructors yell at you is that you are in good company.
    They yell at EVERYONE.
And, in all honesty, if you cannot handle a little screaming in your face, then you are not really ready for life in general.

What you'll never be ready for is when they yell at you after chow time and they just ate a butt load of onions. You'll be in for a treat. Will definitely wake you up and will defintely make you want to head butt them...don't do it!
  • Sorry for dragging this out of the depths, but I just wanted to report that as of Dec. 15, I graduated from the academy. It was an amazing experience. In my bay, there were 15 girls (myself included.) I did make the mistake of yelling back to the cadre...yeah, well, I didn't do it again. I never swung at anyone though!!!!! I lost 12 pounds while I was away (This I don't understand because we worked out everyday except Sunday.) I made squad leader, then platoon sgt, and that was tough. Class 11 (my class) graduated 109 cadets, and I had the honor of singing the National Anthem upon graduation. Thanks to those who stuck around while I was gone, we had no internet access, so I couldn't very well check in on here.
