Sugar and sugar replacements

I'm looking for a little help. If I am to use sugar in recipes, what kind is the 'best' to use? I am not willing to use sugar replacements and have completed cut out of my diet as there are simply too many unknowns as to the value/harm these have on my health. There has to be something better out there than refined white sugar though?
