Hair help-do I help my curls or moisturize?

I have frizzy, half curly half wavy, dry hair. Recently my hair feels like straw.

Should I choose products to moisturize my hair or ones specifically for curls? Or both?

I don't know how to take care of my hair (half way down my back) so what are your routines?

Any specific brands, products, tips, tricks, anything that'll help would be GREAT!

I just got my hair done yesterday and apparently, my hair is super dry and damaged(i also have naturally curly hair). The salon lady didn't try to sell me anything, she told me instead, to use a Mayo-olive oil hair mask at least once a week for as long as i can leave it in for. She claims it works better then anything else.
Sooo, I am going to try this out one day :)

I've heard of a ton of different combinations of hair masks and that is one of them! Did she say how much of each? Thinking I might try that before I go buy expensive products lol.

I think just enough so its not Runny in your hair. So a few table spoons of mayo and a little bit of the olive oil, to make a paste.

I think it might work well. I was willing to buy something and she told me not to bother. It was nice and honest of her.

But she stressed to me, to do it at least once a week for as long as i could leave it in. You could also through in some avocado!

hmmm ...I none off the top of my head. When your showering, let your conditioner stay in up until your ready to rinse off and get out. I find it just helps make my hair extra smooth. Do you straighten or use a curling iron at all? I am a curling iron fan x1000 so I always use the CHI iron guard, which you apply before you use a hot tool of some sort. It smells super good, protects your hair and i find it holds my curls better with less frizz :) Ill brainstorm some more lol

I have been recently using the WEN hair care products. Believe it, that work. My hair feel so good. And it is suppose to work on all hair types. I am Africian American
The key thing is is does not strip all the natural oils from our hair. I had been chemically treating mine hair for year (A relaxer), and recently cut all the chemicals out, and am going totally natural.
I have noticed also, my color last longer, which was always an issue with me, because I sweat a lot. Lot of infomercials out there for WEN and there is a WEB site also.

You are better off cutting the damaged hair off. Healthy hair starts at the root. Don't blow dry it or style it. Let those curly be free!

avoid any product with a lot of alchohol. That will dry out hair even more. I use curly hair shampoo and conditioner, but I can't buy the same brand back-to-back. I alternate between TRESemme and Aussie brands. When I use the same brand for longer than a month or two, my hair gets dull and lifeless. After conditioning, I rarely brush my hair, that snaps my hair and frizzes it....I use my fingers to comb though my hair while still wet. I hardly ever blow dry my hair, I let it dry naturally.

Get your dead/split ends cut off too, that will help a lot in the frizz control.

I'm going to have to try that mayo/olive oil trick tho!

ETA: I do not wash my hair every day. I condition every day, but shampoo about every other day.

I had schizo half wavy/curly hair, and I started the "curly girl method" (aka "no poo method" or co-wash) and it made a huge difference for me...my hair is now actually curly and doesn't frizz (and I live in the South).

Here's a recent forum link about it. Google it too.

For one thing, make sure you are buying sulfate free products.. I noticed a big change in my curly hair when I switched to them.

Another thing you can do is cowash (also known as conditioner washing). Instead of using Shampoo on your hair, just wash with conditioner and see if that helps at all.

sometimes i would go a day without shampooing too. Just conditioner, and it totally makes a difference in your curls. Good call PP

I have extremely curly hair, and I live in Georgia so you can imagine the humidity does a number on my hair in the summer months. For shampoo and conditioner I really like Redken products, and I don't shampoo everyday, more like 2 or 3 times a week. I do condition more often than that, though. For hair styling, I've tried a ton of products but nothing works better for me than Herbal Essences hair gel for curly hair. And sometimes for extra control I'll use a shine gloss spray.

One definite for curly hair....NEVER BRUSH! Throw away any brushes you have. Only comb your hair once after you get out of the shower to detangle, then put in whatever product you use while your hair is still wet. Then leave it alone. Any detangling you try after that will ruin the curl pattern of your hair and lead to frizz.

If you have to blow dry, make sure you have a diffuser for your blow dryer and only blow dry it half way, let the rest air dry after that. But it's really best to let curly hair air dry.

I will randomly use heat on my hair and I rarely used heat protection so I think I'll start using that more again!

The trick to getting your hair into better condition is to make sure you're doing a protien (keratin) treatment as well as a moisture treatment. Either/or won't do the job because repairing cuticular damage needs to be done by replacing both protien and moisture.

For at home care I suggest getting some extreme cat treatment by redken, it's a spray in treatment, for keratin. And for moisture, Id use pureology's essential repair conditioner for moisture. Also, if you're looking for an everyday styling/leave in product, I'd get Miracle Filler by Pureology. It fills in the porosity of damaged and processed hair and I notice a huge difference with my clients that use it at home.

    Good luck :)

Many many years ago I used some Redken and loved it, but I didn't NEED it so I stopped using it. Might go back to that, thanks!

I use Garnier leave in condition every morning. The older i get the dryer my hair becomes. This stuff has made it so much softer and not so frizzy and fly away.

I have naturally curly hair and I alternate between weekly protein (mayonnaise/egg) and moisturizing (coconut oil/honey) deep conditioning. I simply mix the ingredients, apply to my hair and cover with a plastic cap for anywhere from 15 mins to overnight depending on my needs. Then, I rinse and shampoo afterwards followed by a leave-in conditioner (I use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie) and my regular styling products. I will sometimes seal my hair for added moisture using pure Aloe Vera Gel prior to my leave-in conditioner and styling products. However, I would not suggest doing this when it is humid since curly hair draws moisture from the air already and doing so will encourage frizz. So basically, I reserve that for when it is dry and cold (in the winter).

i don't have curly hair but one of my best friends does & when she goes to the hair dresser to get it cut (which should be done often) they put in a curl hold product in that is the best thing she has ever used
as far as for the dryness there are moisturizing shampoos (ex. Tresemme Hydration), also as other people have said natural moisturizing masks are great

i have weird hair, some of it is straight, some wave & the under-layer has some curls
i brush my hair pre-shower & after the shower i don't brush it, i towel dry, flip my head over & scrunch it with my hands to get the waves more defined, then i let it air dry scrunching my hair every once in a while to hold in the waves - if i really want it polished i scrunch it with mousse & dry it on low heat while i scrunch ...maybe this will work for your hair
