A good 5k

So a little back story on me.

Two years ago I honorably discharged from the US Army. While I was in the Army, I was an Air Assault Infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division. After the Army, I took a nice soft desk job and all of my nice hard muscle has turn to squishy fat. My BMI is now around a 40 ish.

I have already started the appropriate Diet and Exercise Regimen. However, I am looking for a long term goal.

I am looking for a great 5k run to be my near term goal. I am thinking about the Run For Your Lives run, It looks like a blast, but I am open to other Ideas.

My long term Goal is a Tough Mudder run. Seeing as how my heart is very near and dear to the wounded warrior program. I will be doing on of these.

I would greatly appreciate your feed back.

    Hey JMC,

    First, thanks for your service!

I'm in my 40's and have never been in the shape that I'm sure you were in while actively serving. That said, I started running about 7 weeks ago and ran a 5k 4 weeks ago.

You've aware of what you need to do and look like you have goals in mind and will get there.

Feel free to add me as a friend and we'll keep each other motivated to get moving.

We have a similar story. I was an Infantryman, (Airborne-Ranger) and retired from the Army in 2001. I stayed active for a while and then lapsed into doing nothing. Finally last year I got back on track and am now in better shape than I ever was in the Army.

The good news is that it all will come back. The bad news is that it takes a lot of work. I think your goals look good and you shouldn't have any problem meeting either of them within the year. In the longer term you may find yourself hooked on running and trying to set ever faster PRs.

    Good luck.

    Request sent!

I am really liking the way the Zombie Run looks. Luckily my workplace sponsors dozens of 5k runs a year for different charities, so I will be doing most of those. I am really upset at myself for how far I let myself go.

I guess i knew how bad i was getting, but it just didn't register, know what I mean? The all of a sudden, I looked at myself and said this has got to stop. I'm glad my wife didn't marry me on my looks that's for sure!

I am ready for the hard work! Honestly 2 weeks in to a very serious goal driven, exercise program, and I am feeling great.
