vegetarianism and eating local

Curiosity question: Is it possible to be a vegetarian and a locavore if you live in a climate that makes it nearly impossible to grow/harvest vegetables year round?
Follow-up question: Are any of the vegetarians here bothered by the adverse ecological impact of shipping vegetables from far off places? Do you try to get around this issue (storing or preserving food for the fall/winter), or do you just accept the ecological challenges because you feel the benefits outweigh the costs?
Thanks.

I'm a vegan in an area that grows nothing. Its too cold to grow any fruit besides berries, and there are fresh veggies 2 months of the year (July/August) Thats it. Its no different for me to be a vegan and eat food that has been shipped from another country, then if I were eating meat and still eating the veggies that were shipped from another country.0
