Weighted Hula Hooping - Your Thoughts/Experience?

I've seen several of my MFP friends doing the weighted hula hoop....
It looks like soooo much fun, and could be just what I need to get motivated again. I am most definitely the type of person who will stick to a workout if its fun & doesn't really feel like a workout, so I think this might be the ticket to at least get started!
Have you tried it? Likes/Dislikes? Recommendations?

I just started this past week with a 3-pound hoop - I love it! The only problem is the waviness of the hoop is a bit painful - if I do it for too long, it feels as if my waist has been pounded by one hundred tiny fists. But I do it anyway - too much fun!0

How does your lower back feel after doing the hoop? Does anyone who does it, and has lower back issues, find it affects your back at all, either positively or negatively?0

I found a Gold's Gym brand 2.5 pound hula hoop from Walmart - it seems to be a good size & weight for a beginner. It also has a workout video included...I think I might just go ahead and get it ...i mean, its only $200

I don't have back issues, but I would recommend adding time on the hoop gradually. It took me a few tries to keep it up more than a few seconds. I don't think you'll have issues if you gradually build up. I do it during commercial breaks while watching TV.0

I made my own hoop and its not weighted. To me the weighted hoop is not as good of a workout. It takes less effort to spin a weighted one because of the momentum. Plus I did not like all the soreness and bruises with the weighted.
The smaller and lighter the hoop them more effort it takes to keep it up. Mine is 36in and not weighted (just the weight of the tubing). I made my daughter on that was 42in and 2lbs. It was much easier for her to do.
Either way, weighted or not, your getting a workout!0 -

Thats sorta another reason why I wanted to get one of these things, to do at least small amount of physical activity when I am being lazy...like commercial breaks or just whenever lol0 -

I made my own hoop also 2 actually in different sizes. i never measured them I just made one about chest high and 1 few inches smaller. I think it is fun but have not done it with hrm to measure calories burned. it still hurts the waist if you over do it. it takes a bit to get used to.0

I have a 5 pound one. and I think its awesome!
And it always hurts in the beginning. You just have to keep doing it, little by little in the beginning, not too much and you'll get used to it.0
