"Paleo Diet" Question

I have seen several people here mention that they eat to "paleo standards" etc, usually stating that they eat primarily meat/proteins with a very small amount of "healthy carbs"....

I'm not terribly educated on carbs/fiber.... but for those of you eating to "paleo standards" - how much fiber is in your daily diet? Is it like what's quoted below? If so, HOW???

I thought this was an interesting part of an article I was just reading:

"The cheat: Go ahead and eat bread
The recent vilification of bread could be keeping you from losing weight — because plenty of types of bread have fiber, and fiber, Roberts says, “is a great weight-loss aid. Paleolithic man ate about 100 grams a day, and current man eats about 15 grams a day.” Even people who aren't hunting a woolly mammoth benefit from fiber: In various long-term studies at Tufts, Roberts and her colleagues have found that the people who successfully lose and manage their weight eat about 45 to 50 grams of fiber a day. Fiber not only provides a sense of fullness, it also regulates the speed at which your body processes sugars, and it can limit the intake of fat and cholesterol. "

Look at my avatar as the basis for what we eat on a Paleo based diet.

Yes, is contains a lot of protein in the forms of meat, eggs and fat, however we eat a LOT of veggies, nut and a little bit of fruit.

Drink lots of water and herbal tea too.

    We DON'T eat the following:

    Grains
    Legumes (beans or lentils)
    Dairy

    ooops double post.

However, I just noticed something in that article.

In the absence of grains and other refined carbs, there is no reason to limit fat intake.

Fat intake is about 60-65% of my eating plan every day.

NOW I get it, thanks Lioness!!!! :embarassed:

I had it stuck in my head that meat etc was the bulk of your calories, and that everything else was a smaller amount.... which is only marginally accurate.

Of course I wasn't thinking that you could eat tons of veggies and a smaller portion of fruits for waaaay less calories than similar portions of meat.

DUH .... not sure why I had it that the diet called for say..... 6 pieces of chicken, 5 steaks, and 2 carrots in a day. LOL

Sometimes misconceptions are soooooo way off :blushing:

Thank you again, I've learned something huge.

Yes, there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Just like there are so many misconceptions about the Atkins diet that I have been following since December 2008.

I have several Paleo type books:

    Neanderthin

    The Paleo Diet

The Primal Blueprint (this is my most recent and the plan I am starting to follow) - it is my favorite book of the 3 I own.

Here is a good website to visit to learn more:

I thought you could keep yogurt and milk? That is why I considered it.

Not supposed to, technically, but a LOT of people do, especially raw dairy products.

There is the 80% rule, abide by the rules for 80% of the time, so there is room for Fage.

I am just giving it up for a while once I get rid of the 3 big containers I have in my fridge.

  • What is the point of the Paleo diet? Does it have some special health benefits? It seems really restrictive!

This is the Primal Blueprint plan, the others are similar in some respects.

Combining modern genetic science with the immutable principles of human evolution, health and fitness expert Mark Sisson presents a revolutionary, easy-to-follow program based on ten Primal Blueprint laws that will change your life forever:

■Learn about the one concept that will guarantee lifelong weight control—no matter who you are, how much extra weight you carry, or what your family genes are like.
■Learn the reasons you crave sugars and sweets–and easy steps to eliminate those cravings forever.
■Naturally control your appetite—and blood sugar levels—so well that you will sometimes have to remind yourself to eat!
■Burn your stored body fat as a ready source of energy 24 hours a day.
■Discover how popular low-fat, grain-based diets can trigger illness, insidious lifelong weight gain and devastating diseases.
■Learn how a high-fat diet can help you lose weight and why it is actually healthy.
■Reject gimmicks like regimented meal times, portion control, strict caloric ratios, and food point scores. Instead, eat like our ancestors and be totally satisfied at every meal.
■Discover a complete strategy of eating, exercising and living that is fun and comes naturally—even for the “unmotivated” types!
■Achieve incredible fitness breakthroughs in a fraction of the time and with a fraction of the suffering!
■Reduce your risk of developing conditions like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
■Stabilize blood sugar levels without medication.
■Naturally control certain commonly medicated conditions like depression, hypoglycemia, diabetes and high blood pressure.
■Get through the “cold and flu season” scot-free.

I'm glad to hear that. I know people who were on Atkins that just ignored exercise alltogether. Maybe they weren't following it properly. Just was asking and not judging

No they weren't following it correctly. Dr Atkins states in the book very emphatically that exercise is non-negotible. He says that a person should at least walk or find something mild they enjoy doing.

Now, when I was at my heaviest - my own doctor started me on Atkins in 2003. I am only 5' 3" and weighed 268 pounds. He did not want me exercising until I was under 220. So, I didn't exercise the first 48 pounds I lost, then I started out walking and moved up from there.

I have always been an exerciser, I gained all my weight because of diabetes, PCOS, and thyroid issues.
