its pathetic but I have quit worrying about what others do or dont do. I like the "high" I get from exercise so I figure those who dont exercise are missing out.0

I couldn't agree more, I'm just focused on breaking those bad habits that where taught to me and trying to give my son a better way in life.. i want him to be healthy and love exercise from the start0 -
I only worry about what others are doing because I'll probably end up paying for the medical expenses related to it.0

leading by example is the best way. let him see how you enjoy it. :flowerforyou:0 -

thats not entirely true. Ask the residents of Mass.0 -
Most other countries that are much 'healthier' than us, don't spend a lot of time exercising either. They spend a lot of time doing activity daily. They walk or bike to work. They live closer to wear they work so they can do this. We have more space than many countries and live MUCH farther from where we work. For most of us, walking or biking to work isn't an option.
If you take the American diet out of the equation, our lack of exercise is similar to other countries. We just get far less activity because of location and car culture.
I spent a week in Seoul where we walked a lot - including MANY subway stairs. I lost 6 lbs. eating whatever I wanted (mostly American food). It was strictly the lifestyle there.0 -
I agree with the sadness of this photo, in general. But, as a side note, at my gym we have alot of elderly people and people that use it for rehab, and some of these people couldn't physically do that many stairs. And, is this even a real picture?0

I bet if they made the stairs fun, then more people would climb them... I saw this video by VW about this subway somewhere in Europe (I honestly can't remember where)... 2/3 of the people exiting the subway would use the escalator... then they (I presume VW) made the stairs look like a set of piano keys and the amount of people using the stairs switched to 2/3.... more people where using the stairs because it was "fun".
ETA: It was in Stockholm... google VW piano stairs and you can see the video.0 -

I have used this picture multiple times in presentations I've given at school. I am a sport and exercise psychology PhD student and adjunct professor and have a huge interest in physical activity levels in kids. I think our culture is so into instant gratification that not many people are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to do something that is so good for us.0
