The word fat doesn't bother me and I'm not a big fan of "politically" correct words. This reminded me of Whoopie Goldberg doing a comedy show. She was discussing the absurdity in how the "politically" correct word to describe a black person keeps changing. Then she goes on to list the various words: negro, colored, black, African American (and any others that I've forgotten) and she discusses how she finds it silly that we are so eager to embrace this nonsense of "changing words" every time society deems it necessary....0

I'm a chemist, so when I hear "fat" I think of fatty acids and lipids. I think of fats in food. I think of body fat. I don't think of people. I generally think of people in terms like overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. A very thin person still has fat stores in there body, so fat doesn't really translate for me.0
-
I prefer to refer to myself as "fluffy".0
-
I am fat. You see this jiggly stuff on my body? That is fat. It is not muscle, bone, or connective tissue. It is fat.
And I am sick and tired of all the political correctness. Just call things what they are.
Well, you are fat, bones, muscle, tendon, skin, and hair. And water. Really, if we are going with what you MOSTLY are, I would say you are water.0 -
The fat word doesn't bother me. I am fat, if you say it or not, you still see it. I wouldn't ever call someone else fat. But I am who I am. Right now I am fat. But, my fat does not define who I am. If it does for other people, then they can take a hike!0

Let's use "Big Boned".... better?0
-
You're a bloody fat prick - that's offensive.
You're fat and need to lose some pounds not offensive.
Your right, all in the way you put it.
I don't mind "You need to loose a few pounds because your *kitten* is fat". I do mind "you need to put down the fork and join a gym because your too damn fat". Plus it depends on who's saying it.0 -
I am fat and I am obese. I have no problem calling myself that. Others have a problem with me calling myself that. The problem is that when people think fat or obese they automatically think lazy. Because I have never been lazy and co-workers know it they don't like to hear me say it. I am fat and proud. If I lose 20 pounds I will still be fat, obese, and proud of me. If I lose 50 pounds I will still be all three. It's only if I lose 100 pounds that I would not be fat or obese but again I will still be proud. I do not allow where my body is to make me feel less proud. I love it where it is and go from there.
Also, it's in the tone you use and who says it. If someone who does not know me or my medical history makes a remark about my weight I will rip their bloody head off. They are stepping into a private, personal space boundary issue. Plus when you are my size everyone and I mean everyone thinks they have the right to comment. They do not.0 -

Here are the definations for fat and obese. Both sound the same, which is you need to lose weight.
To me it is what it is. I dont want to be called fat or obese or really any of the terms you used, but I am. So I am doing my best to change it.
If it bothers you so much make a commitment to get the weight off and stay off. And then you will not have to hear any of the terms for being overweight. Easier said then done, I know, but the truth.
fat- (of a person or animal) Having a large amount of excess flesh.
Obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, usually 20% or more over an individual's ideal body weight.0 -
I hate the word fat, because it is used to categorize anyone who is anywhere from 5 pounds to 100+ pounds overweight. My sister quit eating dinner yesterday, because food makes you fat. She has a mental disability so mom is going to have to get her to start eating again. My daughter doesn't want to be "fat" so she is starting to skip meals, too. My daughter is at a healthy weight, and very beautiful. She is having trouble though, because she sees skinny people at school saying how fat they are. (Gotta love the teenage years). The only time I have heard the word obese is from a doctor so that doesn't bother me- they have to have a term for everything. So for me I don't call anyone fat. I think it's rude. Plus if they are truly overweight- they know it. I don't need to point out the obvious.0

You know 'vent' is also a chicken's butt hole, right?
Nah the word fat doesn't bother me. Calling names bothers me, so if someone is using the word to make someone feel bad, that's not cool.
But really, the pouch on my belly... it's full of fat (but not for long!). It's just a word to describe a thing.
Edited to add: A word is only going to have as much power as you give it. Don't give it any power and it can't bother you. It's really all how you chose to look at it.0 -

See, you aren't thinking this way because you're a chemist-- you're thinking this way because you have common sense and reason. And bit of tact!0 -
I dunno what it is but I just can't stand to hear/read the word "Fat". I have never used that word nor anyone in my family does. I will not allow it. I think that word is so degrading, humiliating and just wrong to say. Many other words could be used in place. Obese, large, big & to much of someone, etc. Am I the only one that has this problem?0

Not to be mean... but it is what it is. If you are black, you are black. If you are white, you are white. Fat is fat. Im sorry if some people dont like it. It IS what it IS.0 -
People cannot be fat. They can be people. Fat does not = to a human being. It's like calling someone who has acne problems a zit. Seriously? Have some tact.0
-
I'm with you. I do not like the word obese.0
-
You won't allow it?
Yeah, that jumped out at me too0 -

Fat is an adjective. Zit is a noun. They really don't equate. People can be fast, fit, fast, tall etc, it's all accurate.0 -

The only adjective in my mind if PHAT.
"Fat consists of a wide group of compounds that are generally soluble in organic solvents and generally insoluble in water. Chemically, fats are triglycerides, triesters of glycerol and any of several fatty acids. Fats may be either solid or liquid at room temperature, depending on their structure and composition. Although the words "oils", "fats", and "lipids" are all used to refer to fats, "oils" is usually used to refer to fats that are liquids at normal room temperature, while "fats" is usually used to refer to fats that are solids at normal room temperature. "Lipids" is used to refer to both liquid and solid fats, along with other related substances, usually in a medical or biochemical context. The word "oil" is also used for any substance that does not mix with water and has a greasy feel, such as petroleum (or crude oil), heating oil, and essential oils, regardless of its chemical structure."
HMMM. Don't see "person" in there! But again, this is *just a preference*. If you don't mind going around saying "I"m fat, you're fat, fat fat fat*** fat fat" then that's you. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and this is why. Personal preference!0 -

Source is dictionary.com as I don't have access to a physical dictionary at the moment. Regardless of your 'personal preference', the word fat can be and is used as an adjective. Posting selective definitions won't change that.0 -
I'm on here to lose FAT! I don't want to lose muscle, I call it what it is, I'm honest with myself! I can't call myself fat anymore, I am calling myself fit with a few pounds of fat left to lose! When I was fat, I was fat!0
-
It's not a problem for me because the other words just translate to the same thing when I hear them in my head. Heck, eventually society attaches the same connotations to the new word and we come up with something else to replace the replacements. Soon we'll be "fit-challenged" or something.
I say call it what it is and actually fix the problem, not the word. IMO, anyway.
I swear, reading your post sounded like reading something I would write! I think I have a brain twin on myfitnesspal, and it makes me smile.0
