Is there a better time?

Just curious....I can find more time to work out (other than walking) at night....does it matter what time of day you exercise?

I almost always exercise at night. I have two small children so the only time I really have to workout is at night. I don't think it makes any difference. In fact I like it. It is a good way for me to unwind! The only problem I have is finding the motivation sometimes. Sometimes at night I am just too tired by that time. Hope this helps.

Whenever you actually do it is the best time.

Eat when you can, workout when you can.
If that means for your schedule you get up at 4 am and do a 30 minute run because it's all the time you can squeeze, fine.
if that means.... you don't workout until 10pm and can fit in 30-60 minutes... fine... activity is activity...

I definitely agree. My fiance works nights, so we eat and workout at crazy times and it seems to be working so far :))

    Just a couple of considerations...

    1. Make sure you can do it safely. If you plan to walk, make sure you have somebody to go with you.. there are so many weirdos around these days... Safety first.

    2. Some who exercise at night have problems sleeping as a result. Make some plans for a settling down time... That being said, most of the time, I go to the gym at night. (my schedule demands it)... I really enjoy it .. Usually, I get a granola bar on the way back home or a small meal if I have not yet eaten. The 25 minute ride home helps as well to help me unwind ... However, my wife has at times walked on her treadmill here at home right before bedtime.. When she does that, she has difficulty falling asleep HOWEVER, almost always, she meets a friendlier scale the next morning.

The only bad thing working out could possibly do is keep you from getting to sleep immediately after your workout. Other than that, workout when you can.

Time of day has absolutely no effect on anything, so long as you do it.

I work an off schedule...overnights so I always work out later in the night..around 8-10:30 p.m. I believe it is whatever works best for you as a calorie burned is a calorie burned regardless of what time it is.
  • I normally exercise in the morning, just to get it out of the way and then I have the rest of the day to do what I like. But I seem to have more motivation in the afternoons as I have already eaten and know what I need to do to burn what if had. Depends on when your feeling most motivated and its all personal preference. If I have work in the morning il go in the evening and vice versa. Just don't exercise about an hour after eating as this could be painful!

Time of day certainly has an effect on my exercise intensity

If I exercise in the morning I am full of energy and enthusiasm - result = High intensity, high productive workout
If I exercise late afternoon I am sluggish, pre-occupied and lack-lustre - result = Low intensity, low productive workout
If I exercise in the evening I have more time, some energy and some enthusiasm - result = medium intensity, carefully planned, productive workout

I get up at 4:30 before my kids get up to workout. For me, that helps me get energized for the day and up and ready to go. Also that is the only time I can ever get a workout in. If I wait to do it later, I don't have any motivation to get up and do it. Do it whenever you feel is best for you! Any workout is a good workout.

Does not matter. But, for me morning is best. I like getting it over with early. I tend to make excuses as the day goes on if I don't do it early.
  • Cool Beans :) That was kind of my thinking...as long as it gets done, it doesn't matter when, lol.
It was always morning during the school year, but in summer it's a bit harder for me to get up and get it done before the kids are up and the hubby is home from work...I hate to have people home/awake when I work out, lol...............but I did it this morning!!!! 20 minutes of pretty good kickboxing!!!!!!!!
