Grossed out by food?

Okay! Here it goes. So, I've always been weird about eating meat.. For the longest time (as long as I can remember) when I consciously think of what I am eating (an animal) I feel extremely grossed out and begin to gag.. and then I stop eating instantly. Well, recently it's gotten worse. Especially with chicken and beef. Well, now (maybe the last three weeks) most all foods are grossing me out. Not until I begin to eat though. I start eating and my mind starts wondering and I get grossed out by the food. Today I was eating a salad for example. I started getting grossed out wondering if the veggies were cleaned well enough or what type of pesticides were on them..To be completely honest, this has nothing to do with weight loss. I want to eat, and I'm not getting grossed out by the calories or carbs or anything. I know to be healthy and lose weight in a healthy weight my body depends on food...I just keep getting disgusted over whether its clean enough, what hormones are in the meat, how the animal was treated, what type of pesticides are on the food.. I even freaked out over a diet soda wondering if the can was cleaned well enough.. Does anyone else go through this? I have no idea what is going on! Advice is welcomed. :) Thanks!

Yeah, agree. This sounds like an intrusive, obsessive thought pattern. Don't let it get worse. If you can't stop the thoughts, get help.

Thanks. As a Psych major I KNOW it's not normal. My boyfriend and I discussed it and he is wondering if it's stress from everything going on. From the outside looking in it seems like an OCD tendency forming. Just a thought, however i'm not a doctor..

I agree. It could be an OCD behavior. Or not. But GOOD FOR YOU for recognizing it. And taking some action by asking about it.
I'd check in with a therapist. I'm a fan of taking care of myself - inside and out and therapy is good at times when you need to work through something. You are taking care of you.

On the doctor...nah. Try just being grateful for your food. Say grace. Bless it and move on. Don’t think about the dead animal or plant. Think about the gift you are given. Focus on how wonderful it tastes and smells. Fake the enjoyment for a while. It comes. We are very well trained to feel guilty. Buy organic, free range if you can. It’s important.

You actually seem to have a handle on what may be developing. Stress can do very strange things to a person. Better to get it checked out than not. Many people have aversion to meat based foods... Hence the plethora of Vegans and Vegetarians on the boards... However, when one starts obsessing about the plant based foods, it seems that the root may be a bit more pathological. Best wishes on overcoming these issues... Honestly, weight loss needs to take a back seat until you deal with this issue.. This is the more important one to deal with at the moment... Best wishes.
