I would like to start biking some trails around here but I don't have a bike yet. Does anyone have any suggestions for beginner trail bikes that aren't too expensive?

look into a hybrid/fitness bike with solid front fork from a bike shop. Not a department store.

I'm more of a roadie but once you've defined what you need check out buying a used bike - you can often save a lot of money and get a much better bike than buying brand new (have a bike mechanic check it over before handing over the cash - may cost you a few extra $$ but it's a little peace of mind)

I have a Gary Fisher mountain bike. They don't actually make them anymore, but I saw lots on my local Craigslist for decent prices!

I just bought my kids some Diamondback bikes from D I C K S Sporting Goods. They seem pretty nice and I've heard good things about them.

Oh, and if I were buying a new bike, I'd get a hybrid this time. I did a little actual mountain biking before and it was fun, but not something I could do with my kids. Plus I have to drive further to do it. So instead I stick to the paved paths at my local park and still get a great workout.
