I am 59 year old female who has decided not to hit 60 still overweight and out of shape. I just finally completed my masters degree and added an additional 15 pounds on over the three years it took. (Gain some, lose some betweeen classes, then we went 15 months straight without a break from classes.)
I have been a runner since 1978, but after an injury in 1990, I had to cut back my training and loaded on an average of five pounds a year. Gaining over the winter then losing a few pounds during the nice weather. I went from being a competitive runner to a jogger. No schedule, no training plans, just doing whatever I managed to do or nothing. Went from active job to desk job.
While I was writing and researching my master thesis (exercise and learning) I came across some research that made me want to get back to shape I used to be in. I want to find 'flow' again and be the best that I can be. My research made me contact my doctor to lose weight. I have found a training program that I'm trying to follow to help regain my running speed. I hope to compete in races again next year, not just complete the runs.
I know I will never regain all the speed I used to have, but I want to do the best that I can. I know I need to lose the 40 pounds that I'm lugging around to run faster. I can't wait to lose the weight that I gained over the past year so that my clothes fit. I am trying desperately to avoid all the illnesses that my family members who are all obese are suffering from. I don't get much, if any support from my family. They make fun that as the skinniest, most fit person in the family that my doctor told me I'm obese.
