Bodymedia fit and weight gain?

Hi everyone,
I am so frustrated right now and need some assistance. I have been wearing a bodymedia armband since June 1st. On average, I am burning about 2400-2500 per day. I have been consuming calories that would equal out to about a 750 cal deficit per day. Since I have started wearing the armband, I have been exercising like crazy. Probably 450-600 of my total daily burn is from exercise. I am 5'11 and weighed 155 when I started wearing the band. I went from doing weight watchers to following my ftiness pal so I am very conscious of measuring, weighing and tracking all of my food. My problem is that when I started wearing the armband, I weighed 155. Now, 2 1/2 weeks later, I weigh 158.9! Even if I subtract out the 10% error for calorie burn on the bodymedia device, I should still be buring enough calories to lose, not gain 3.8lbs! I am so frustrated. I feel like I have been working my rear end off for nothing. I should be able to eat 1900-2000 cal per day and still lose and instead I am gaining? I was so excited to find that I could actually eat much more than I thought and still lose. Does anyone have any experience with the bodymedia or bodybugg? Is there any advice you can give me? Is my exercise affecting things? I am so confused. Thank you so much for any help anyone can provide.

My advice is put the scale away. When you start a new level or type or intensity of exercise, stuff happens that makes the scale lie. I don't know what... water, muscle, lunar cycles, whatever. But I promise you you are making positive changes to your body and if you're not seeing them already by how you feel and how your clothes fit, you will be soon. And the scale will catch up eventually. Be patient! Don't start changing things or giving up!

I should add I had a Bugg for a while and have had a Fitbit for years and for me they're great tools. I can go by the numbers I get.

Wait-- You're 5'11" and 155? That's a healthy BMI, lowish even. What is your goal here?

I agree! It may take a few weeks to see the difference on the scale. Maybe you need eat more (having a 750cal deficit isn't always a good thing). See the Eat more, Lose more thread.

Thank you :) It is so hard not to give up. I had lost 14.4 poubds doing Weight Watchers and since wearing the body media am down to a total loss of 10.9. It took me since Jan 25th just to lose the 14.4!

How many cals were you eating before? If your current intake is a big bump, you should expect some initial weight gain (NOT fat gain - there is a difference) but it will stabilize.

I added this above but what is your goal? You're already toward the low end of healthy BMI.

Right before I started using the armband, I was not exercising, so I was eating way fewer calories throughout the week. The armband gives me an additional sometimes 600 calories a day to build my deficit off of when I am working out. My goal weight was 140...but I now think that is a little silly for me. I would be happy with 145.

Shannon, Why do you initially gain weight, even if exercise warrents it, if you bump your calories? I have heard of this but not been able to find much info on it.
  • Remember...as you work out, especially if you are using any type of weights or weight resistance, you are gaining muscle which will add some weight. Do not be discouraged. Look to see how your clothes are fitting. Good luck.

Has anyone else using a bodymedia or bodybugg experienced an initial temporary weight gain when they first started using the device?

It's not muscle. It takes a lot of effort to build muscle. A lot of heavy lifting effort.

It's probably water weight. When you workout you create micro-tears in your muscles and they suck up water as they try to repair themselves.

Put the scale away and go by how your clothes fit!

Why would anyone have an initial gain from wearing a device?

You're trying to get from thin to Hollywood thin, it sounds like. Good luck with that 'problem'.

Is it normal for the water to hang around for 3 weeks?

The initial gain is due to the increase in calories you are afforded if you are chosing to start working out at the same time.

I am not going for "hollywood thin" Healthy weight range for my height is 135-176. I am looking at getting to 145.

I think you may be gaining muscle and that will increase your weight. I suggest taking your measurments and not getting on the scale for a couple of weeks. Maybe even take some pictures now and in a week. I think you will see a difference. It can be so hard but keep going

It's going to take a lot of patience and meticulously managing your deficits.

The scale is such a mightmare! You are so right about taking measurements. That is what really matters, right?
