Anyone have a metal hardware in leg and/or ankle?

I used to be highly active until I broke my ankle and displaced a tibia in 2004. I had emergency ORIF surgery and now have a metal plate and screws in my right ankle. As a result, my right ankle has been almost exactly one inch larger than my left ankle. I can feel the hardware. The heads of the screws can be felt on the surface of my skin, and I always know I have metal, as it just doesn't feel natural like my other ankle.

Now that I've really stepped up my activity levels in terms of jogging and running in conjunction with steep inclines, I'm noticing that the lump of scar tissue on the ankle seems to be dissolving just a bit.

However, some days are painful. To mitigate any potential pain, I buy heat wraps and wear them for a full eight hours after hard exercise. Eventually, I'd like the metal out of my leg.

Do you have hardware in your ankle/leg? How long have you had the hardware? Do you have any pain whilst exercising or after? Any tips?

Thanks!
