Weight loss surgery

When I started this journey I was taking classes that are required prior to having weight loss surgery. Going into it after meeting with nutritionist and completing the required group sessions I was a little on the edge as to what to do, have the surgery and lose the weight that way or lose the weight on my own. After a lot of thinking about it, I didn't like the thought of injecting vitamins, healing, and knowing that my stomach was basically cut to a small sleeve (gastric sleeve surgery) as there are a few surgery options for weight loss. Wondering if anyone else had thought about weight loss surgery and what motivated you to do it on your own. In the class I was taking I learned of MFP, and since I finished the classes, have been on MFP everyday and no longer considering weight loss surgery.

I am very happy with my decision to dedicate to changing the way that I eat and exercise a whole lot more. Went from not caring what I put in my mouth to being aware of each and every bite of what I have, and exercising almost every day.

Anyone have some success stories from their decision not to do weight loss surgery and do it on their own instead?

Last year at this time, I was seriously considering it. I didn't get as far into as you, but I was talking to family and friends about it. Then my aunt stumbled upon this app and got my WHOLE family hooked. Once I started, it just made sense....I mean look @ my progress!! I was 361lbs....I'm 278.4 now!! Seriously!!!

It's a to each his own thing really. If you can go at it this way, it is ideal. If you have a medical necessity, where the risks of waiting are far more dangerous, then by all means.

I am sooooo thankful God put MFP in my path!!

I am so thankful too, you have done such wonderful job, thanks for sharing! No none were life threatening or necessary to be immediate, but seeing others that needed to have it and listening to others talk about their struggles helped a lot. It is so nice to talk with others and find out what their struggles are and how they overcome them.

I met some pretty amazing folks when I did take the classes, they changed my life and introduced me to MFP which has put so many things in perspective for me.

I got the lap band about a year and a half ago. So glad I did. I started a program on my own abut 2 years ago. Also went to nutrition counseling that didn't teach me much more than I already know. I keep track of all my food intake. I watch calories, but especially my fat calories. It is very similar to this program . I keep a running chart of what types of food I also eat each day so I can make better chooses in the evening, or for snacks. Like if i see I only had a few servings or fruit or vegs, I eat what i am lacking for that day. I lost about 40 lbs before I had the surgery, but got the surgery anyway. Not just to loose more weight but to keep it off. I have learned to eat healthier. Of course with the surgery I eat much smaller portions. I have lost another 50 lbs. I would like to lose a bit more but it is coming off very, very slow now. I also got the surgery because it keeps me from slipping up or falling back into some of my old habits. I still have to eat the right things and eat healthy but as far as portions, it is very hard to over eat. I also have gotten a lot healthier and was able to go off of some of my meds. So far me it was the right decision.

That's what I had originally wanted was to do the lap band surgery, but they basically told me no after meeting with them. The lap band seemed the least invasive and still sounds like a great option. If my option was the lap band I would feel easier about it that's for sure.

Did it hurt long? Was it scary to go ahead with the surgery? Do you need to go to the Dr. frequently?
