My body doesn't respond well to carbs so I am looking for some good side dishes that don't consist of rice, pasta or potatoes that I can make with my meat and vegetable dinners.

Any suggestions other than more veggies????

I like to cut up zuchinni and onions - almost 1/2 and 1/2 - toss with 1 Tbls of Olive Oil season with minced garlic salt and pepper - sautee or roast in oven - so good - you can do exactly the same with about any veggie - asparagus is really good this way too - I love lots of garlic.

Fresh fruit cut up is a great side

I just realized you're looking for other stuff to go with your veggies - beans is a great option - baked, black beans

cole slaw - if you find a yummy healthy version let me know

I am a little confused by the question...are you looking for side dishes that are an alternative to carbs, or to veggies? I feel like most side dishes are either one or the other!

If you've been looking for more complex carbs, and an alternative to white rice, white pasta, and white potatoes, then I highly recommend quinoa, brown rice pilaf, and kasha (buckwheat).

I also think that a good old salad is a nice compliment to a meal with cooked veggies in it, because the raw veggies are so different in texture. My mom would always have salad with every dinner, but each night it would be different because she really mixed up what vegetables she put in it.

I was eating mixed vegetables and a boneless chicken breast for lunch everyday. My trainer went over my food and wants me to start adding a carb in. So today I added brown rice to it and it was good. It just seemed like it was to much food. I was so full.

I have always had a meat, a veggie, and a starch on our plate for dinner (thanks mom).
So I am having a hard time finding a side dish that is not a starch (carb) to go along with the meat and veggie. To me it just doesn't look righ to only have meat and veggie on your plate (thanks again mom).

So what I'm asking for is ideas for a side dish other than carb or veggie. Is that possible? And also not too high on calories as I usually eat most of my cals during the day.

We usually have a salad along with the veggies & meat. We change it up a lot.
    Sometimes 2 different veggie sides.
    Look around here:

Some of these use lots of strange (to me at least) ingredients, but you'll find lots of ideas.

What is left if you don't want a carb, veggies, or more meat?

aw, beat me to it, I was about to suggest quinoa.
Be careful though, quinoa is very rich in protein.. and calories. It may be similar to rice, but try not to treat them the say way.

How about two veggies, one cooked and one raw salad-type? I often have my main dish + a veggie (maybe a high carb one like black beans or chick peas or corn) and a salad of some sort. Or a main dish and beans/peas + a green veggie like collards or broccoli.
