Hot yoga (Bikramand running

Looking for opinions. I've almost complete the C25K, and am jogging every other day & I've recently started hot yoga on the days I dont run. (If I do it on the days I do run, I fail miserably at the running)
I'm 194lbs
I've noticed I drop weight faster when I do the running and nothing else and when I started the hot yoga, the weight loss has stalled.
For example. 1.5 lbs lost in 2 weeks compared to 5 or 6 before I started the hot yoga.
I'm logging everything, I don't cheat.
Is it just water retention in the muscles since I'm sore and stretched lately from the yoga or is it something else?
Could I actually lose weight faster by being more lazy?
If weight loss is a simple science of needing to burn more calories than you put in, then I cant figure this out.

  • There are a LOT of factors in play here, so I'll start with some basics:

    1. Are you eating differently on the days you practice hot yoga? Such as, later dinners or earlier dinners, different snacking schedules, different cravings, ect.? Sometimes the mere mineral loss in dehydration can give us different food intake which may be changing weight loss. Protein/Fat/Carb ratios can definitely speed up and slow down weight loss.

    2. I noticed I felt better when I practiced hot yoga, lighter and such, but I wasn't losing a lot of weight on the scale. This could be because the mere action of yoga is isolating and stressing your muscles which may be inflaming them. This isn't all bad! As long as you rest. How many days a week do you practice Bikram? I never go over 4 days a week.

By the same token, too much exercise can release cortisol, a stress hormone that pushes fluid into your mid section. This is a likely culprit if you're feeling puffier than usual around your middle.

There are many other options, maybe this will get the gears turning and you'll come across the solution soon. Great job on your yoga practice.. and good luck! :flowerforyou:
  • One last idea!

Maybe with all of the extra activity, you need to up your intake 2 days a week. Some high calorie days won't kill your weight loss if you're not losing anything.. and many MFP users have reported weight loss by upping their intake.

You may also be gaining muscle. Your measurements and how your clothes fit will give you a better picture.
