Loss of Appetite from medication

So I had just recently started taking my adhd medicine again. I hadn't been on it since the middle of second semester. OH it's adderall btw. I took it in the morning after breakfast and haven't been able to eat anything since. It's literally almost impossible for me eat. When I try to eat its like I'm repulsed, even some of my favorite foods. The only thing I was able to get down was yogurt, probably because it doesn't involve chewing, and it's really sweet. But I can forget about any kind of protein, that just wouldn't work right now.
Anyone else here take add med's? I'm wondering if this will get better soon. It wasn't a problem when I was on it before, but I was taking it regularly since 4th grade. I really don't want to have to choose between my medicine and my diet. The med's do help me ALOT I'm not off the walls and so hyper, I can actually focus on what I'm doing and get it done. The main reason I got back on it is because it was begining to affect my social and personal life in a negative way. I'm so dam impulsive when I'm not medicated, and make really dumb choices that irritate my friends and family. So it is very beneficial in that respect. Although I am cutting calories ATM, I'm not trying to starve myself so something needs to change. Any input would be great.
Thanks MFP's

I'm not on ADD meds, but I am on bi-polar meds and birth control. Whenever I started any medication, I had that side effect, and it usually went away in a little less than 2 weeks. Until then, buy prilosec OTC at the drug store, and take that about 30minutes before you want to eat. It will get rid of some of the nausea, and make it easier for you to eat.
Only take it max 2 times a day though.

I'm actually prescribed prilosec for acid reflux....But like I mentioned before, I'm really stubborn and never took any of em. But if it's going to help me be able to eat, I'll most definitely give it a try. Thank you Madison0

I would check with your doctor and see if you can try another med. Something such as guanfacine ( tenex or intuniv) might give you the impulse control and focusing ability you need, but without the appetite issues from adderall.
OR see if you can take your meds at night instead of first thing in the morning--that way they will be beginning to wear off during the main part of your day.0 -
^Thanks for the help! I can't (well not suppose to) take them at night because they're stimulants and can mess with your sleep patterns. I think I'm going to break them in half and try taking half doses until my body adjusts to it. I'm also going turn my protein shakes into Meal Replacement shakes by adding a bunch a bunch of peanut butter and a banana. I can handle drink those while on my meds, it's just the solid foods that gross me out right now0

I had forgotten that that one is a stimulant--my son was on it for a little while.
When you get the chance, ask about intuniv. It is not a stimulant--one of the side effects is that it can potentially make you sleepy--my son takes the shorter acting version ( tenex) and takes 0.5mg in the am and 1.5mg in the pm.0 -
OH hey now that I think about it, I was on intunitv for along time. My doctor recommended I take it along with adderall for a more stable medicine level. I will ask him about taking it alone. I hope he'll take a phone call from me, I really hate going to the doc!0

I'm on Adderall amongst other meds and after a medicine vacation, I'm back to taking my prescribed dose. I had to push myself to eat 800cals today and almost made myself sick eating the 1300 I got too.
I am going to go back to taking half doses every few hours. I can't afford it due to lack of insurance - but if you have insurance have you tried Adderall XR? My son's father is on it and it does wonders. It does affect is appetite a little, but nowhere near what regular adderall does.0 -
Hey ^ yeah it was tought the fir two days but day3 and it's already getting way easier. I always eat breakfast BEFORE my first dose and take the meds right afterwards (that helped with the nausea alot) I also eat a big filling lunch before I take my second dose. If you can't eat try getting cal's in throuh protein packed protein shakes. Throw in some fruit, some nuts, sum peanut butter, and some sugar. I made a protein shake that had over 600 cals and that was my meal.0

I'm on Methylin ER for ADHD. It messes up my appetite a little, but not to the point where I can't eat. I just have to make a conscious effort to eat, because it's like I kind of forget to. I won't get the signal that I need to eat something until I REALLY need to eat something. By then I've got a massive head ache and hunger pains.
If I keep myself to a schedule I'm better at getting the calories I need. Thankfully my husband is on MFP too, because he had to remind me to eat something just today when he looked at my food diary.0
