Does probiotic = wind?

A genuine question! I've been eating probiotic yoghurt the last couple of days and have had an enormous amount of wind - not necessarily embarrasing as I am a lone worker, but certainly uncomfortable. :blushing:

I'm not eating it for any reason other than the fact it tastes nice (it's a vanilla one), but I'm not sure I want to continue if this is a known problem...

It's supposed to make it better, not worse! Worked for me!

If it's diet yoghurt, it's more likely to be artificial sweeteners or that gum stuff they use to make fat-free stuff creamy.

What Berry said. I wonder if you have a lactose sensitivity going on. I had to stop eating cow milk yogurt because of that. Now I eat goat milk yogurt or lactose free yogurt.

    It should do the opposite.

It's really the lactose more than the bacteria. Lots of people have digestive sensitivity to lactose (while not completely intolerant).

Thanks all! Berry, I've just looked and the only sweetener I can see is sugar, I'm loathe to stop eating it because it's truly lush... I'll have a look at my diary and see if there's anything else!

Do you know if you might be lactose intolerant? I am, but it comes from a genuine allergy to cow's milk as a baby/toddler that I grew out of when I was around 8. The allergy would see me come out in rashy hives and great discomfort but an intolerance remains which leaves me painfully bloated at a sniff of milk and cheese (however I like cheese too much to abstain and put up with being a bit bloated and gassy for a bit).

    Anyway, thought I'd mention! xxx

It didn't do that for me. But everyone's digestive tract is not the same. Stop eating the yogurt for a few days and see if it goes away.

My understanding is that this should be a temporary concern and after your body balances itself you should notice a reduction.

I can't tolerate dairy as well, even the low/no lactose greek yogurts. You might want to try pro-biotic containing foods like sauerkraut and various other fermented foods if you are opting for food sources. I don't get why people always think yogurt immediately when probiotics are mentioned...must be marketing

FYI, but even though certain yogurt brands market themselves as somehow superior to others in the probiotic game, all yogurts have them, so if this specific one is giving you issues, try a different yogurt.

I'm not aware of having any intolerances and eat plenty of cheese and milk - as I said in the original post I wasn't eating it partcularly for the probiotic part, I'd usually buy Rachel's vanilla but happened to be shopping in M&S that day so just chose the nearest I could find.

Thanks all for your responses - I guess by the time I've eaten the other two tubs I bought (on account of it yumminess  ) I'll have given it a fair crack of the whip!

Sometimes the intolerance sneaks up on you. I can have cheese and ice cream, but milk and yogurt bother me. Now frozen yogurt is a problem, but it didn't used to be. My lactose sensitivity is selective and came on pretty suddenly.

I've had probiotic yogurt ... the first kind that I tried was that activia. It made me need to use the washroom a lot. (Ehh... number 2.. haha). I switched to a different brand (Can't remember the name for the life of me...) and it wasn't nearly the same.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. I have suffered from IBS in the past so don't like to jump to any conclusions where my digestive (ooh biccies!) system is concerned, but I'll try to do this as a 'test', as unscientific as it may be! If it IS the yoghurt then when I stop eating it the wind should also abate...

I get your meaning, and that could be the answer! I have all the family round this week (Aunt Flo, Tom, etc, lol!) for the first time in years - I came off the Depo injection last October and I think my body has just twigged :grumble: :grumble: :grumble: I was kind a hoping that at 43 I might just have been settling into a nice early menopause, but no...

This happened to me every time I tried to eat yogurt regularly (I blamed it on an inbalance in my gut flora). After maybe a week or two your body should adjust. If you like the yogurt that much, just stick with it and see what happens : )
