Having surgery next week...? for the ladies

I am having what they call laser cone surgery next week. It's where they go in and cut a cone shape out of the cervix and get rid of any bad cells. They also do a biopsy to make cure there is no cancer. My question is ladies....Has anyone had this done? What was the outcome and was there any pain the day after? (ok so thats 3 questions) The doctor said I shouldn't feel much pain but since he is a dude how does he know how much pain I will feel. I am having it Tuesday afternoon and was just wondering if I should take off work on Wednesday? I really hate to put in for a day if I don't need to. Thanks in advance for your input

I would take a day off, just to be sure you have given yourself a good break. Anything like that you need to rest up to let your body start the healing process. Also with things like this everybody's pain scale can be a little different.

This sounds like something my mother had done several years ago and it was no big deal- and I love her but she can be a whiny butt sometimes hehe :)

I had this done about four years ago. Other than getting over the post-anesthesia grogginess, it wasn't that bad. I only had a bit of discomfort the next day, but that was probably due to them removing my IUD and putting in a new one.

    Good luck on the biopsy!

I work in healthcare and I see these procedures often. You should be fine to go to work the next day if you have a sit down job where you don't do alot moving around. You may have mild pain.

I had something similar done called the LEEP procedure. I've heard that the cone is more invasive and has more down time than the LEEP. I had mine done on a Thursday afternoon took off Friday and was back at work on Monday. Not much pain after the first day. My rec... do take the pain meds and rest... :) And Good Luck.

I did have this done, albeit about 15 years ago! I personally remember only being slightly uncomfortable during the procedure, and not really bothered by it afterwards. If i remember correctly, the cervix doesn't have tons of nerve endings (don't quote me, but you might want to look it up) and so pain there isn't huge. Of course i was in my late 20s, now 15 years later, i suspect i would at the very least want some advil, etc...as you would think there would be a little soreness, especially if you sit all day - gravity may not be the kindest thing. What about taking a half a day off....or if you have the flexibility to take the morning off with the caveat that if you really feel awful, you will stay out the rest of the day. I ended up with a severe dysplasia, and they did a cautery type of procedure back then (as opposed to the freezing). I'm a pain wimp and it wasn't too bad!

ETA - read the above post - my cautery thingy was a LEEP too...and as mentioned wasn't bad.

I had it done years ago, had some cramping and small amount of spotting the next day. Cramping was nothing worse that when TOM was in town.

This sounds like what my mother had done a few years back. She said it was not very painful and recovery was relatively quick.

I had a Leep procedure done and went back to work that day. It wasn't bad just some mild cramping. Yours might be more invasive? Regardless good luck!

I am not sure if its the same thing, but I had a coloscopy because I had abnormal cells present on my cervix. They did a biopsy on the cells and found that it would go away and was nothing serious. It didn't really hurt, and I didn't have to be put under or anything. They just used a local anesthetic, went up there and cut out a piece. It took like 5 minutes. It didn't really hurt after, but I had some spotting and I couldn't have intercourse for about 2 weeks. You might see some thicker chunks of tissue/bleeding than normal, but I didn't find it to be too painful. So if thats what you are getting, I wouldn't worry too much. You shouldn't need to take a day off.

I had the colposcopy two weeks ago and they did the biopsy and showed I had a moderate change in the cells from last year so that is when they decided to do the lazer cone thingy.

Since you're having it in the afternoon, I'd go ahead and plan to take the following day off. I had it done years ago. It's really not a big deal, but you will have some spotting and cramping.

What is with the colonoscopy comments? The cervix is inside the VAGINA at the base of the UTERUS, nowhere near the colon, and the procedure she's having is not even remotely LIKE a colonoscopy.

I think what was meant was colposcopy, which is a biopsy of the uterus, not a colonoscopy. Just a missing "p" in there.

I've had the procedure. I wasn't too uncomfortable afterwards, but had a TON of bleeding for a couple of days, making it impossible to do much of anything. Give yourself time to rest and heal. Even if it's not very physically challenging, I think we need to be very gentle with ourselves when our nether regions are being poked and prodded. Good luck, sweetie.

A colposcopy looks at the cervix. A colonscopy looks at the colon.

It's actually called a colposcopy and you can have it with or without the cone biopsy. I hade the cone biopsy. I had it two years ago and a coworker just had it a few weeks ago. You can go to work the next day, but it is uncomfortable. It was almost a feeling of being the most dry I've ever been in my whole entire life, and it just didn't feel right. It was like I just wanted to lube up with something, but was afraid to because its essentially a wound down there. Both she and I had the most disgusting tissue ever coming out the next day because of the cautery. Bleh. You definitely will not feel your most pleasant ever. If you have to walk alot or dont have access to a bathroom whenever you want, you know, for example if you work a register or something, I'd suggest taking the day off.

Yea, sorry about my mis-spell, I get confused with medical terms and their spellings. I am not sure how the pain is, but I found this link that might help you with knowing what to expect. :) Hope it goes well!

Thank you all for your thoughts and comments. Thinking I may take off the day after. I get sick days at work so I might as well take advantage of them. I haven't had to use any in a long time.
