What does it mean when my net calories are -72.For that matter, what are net calories anyway?

Those are the calories remaining. If it's in the negative, you are done. Exercise more and gain more calories to be able to consume. Just like a paycheck, you start with a gross amount, then things are taken out...what you have left is your net - same concept.

if your Net Calories on you homepage are -72, it means you have burn more calories than you have consumed, this happens to me when I bike to work.
You need to eat something to get back in the proper calorie range.

    What are Net Calories?

We set your nutritional target in Net Calories which we define as:

Calories Consumed (Food) - Calories Burned (Exercise) = Net Calories

What that means is that if you exercise, you will be able to eat more for that day. For example, if your Net Calorie goal is 2000 calories, one way to meet that goal is to eat 2,500 calories of food, but then burn 500 calories through exercise.

Think of your Net Calories like a daily budget of calories to spend. You spend them by eating, and you earn more calories to eat by exercising.

Netting negative calories isn't a good thing. It means you've exercised more than you have eaten for the day. You want to net a minimum of 1200 calories per day, but I always try to net above my BMR by at least a couple of hundred calories. You can find out what your BMR is by going to Tools<BMR Calculator.
