Hi - I am new here and I am hoping to lose 40lb. I have four boy's and have struggled with my weight since my last son was born, in fact I way more now then I did when I was pregnant:blushing: and he is now 3yrs so can't blame it on baby weight any more. I was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism 3yrs ago, I like to think that it won't effect my weight loss though.

Don't bet on it!
Hypothyroidism really really stinks...and if you're not PROPERLY medicated...you won't get anywhere fast. You'll struggle, you'll fight, you'll stick to a killer diet and strenuous workout schedule...and progress will be slow or won't happen at all. But then if you quit...even for a short while, you'll put weight on like a house on fire.
If you're not PROPERLY medicated, workouts will do you little good...because when you're hypothyroid, the body believes it's starving...and will therefore store all calories obtained as body fat...and rather than burn the body fat (which is necessary for the starving body to have) it will break down muscle tissue for fuel and not repair it entirely--remember your heart is a muscle...
This is what happened to me. It took me a year and a half of serious 6-day-a-week workouts and careful diet to lose 20 pounds (and I was on synthroid at the time). I used to think...NO WONDER people give up and stay fat when it's THIS HARD! It wasn't until I switched to Armor Thyroid that my body started responding to the work I was making it do.
Hate to dump cold water all over your optimism...but...it's better to approach it being realistic about what your unique situation means for your efforts.0 -
I was worried that might be the case. I am on levothyroxine 125mg a day, it has taken this long for me to feel ok again as when diagnosed my thyroid tsh levels were 97.3 , normal range in being between 0.5 and 5 I think , doctor told me at the time that it would take a while to feel back to normal. I won't throw myself into loads of exercise though, just start off gently as I believe diet is going to make the biggest difference (having already tried doing the gym 4 times a week) . If nothing happens then I will go to my gp. Whenever I have mentioned weight and thyroid to doctors before, they just say I am on medication so should not make a difference (I don't believe them though).0
