True?

With a 2 lb per week goal, my goal calories today are 1790 and because I played golf today my total was 3880. Seems too good to be true and if it's true, I'm frightened of what my calorie total was when I was gaining weight. As a newbie, it is fascinating.

True, most of the time. You have to find what works for you. If the calorie burn seems like too much maybe eat back half. I think that only people who use HRMs have an accurate count.
Two pounds a week is very ambitious and may reduce calories too much so weight loss can be slow. You may want to think about putting it to 1 pound a week. Don't quite understand the science behind it but if you go through the posts some explain it well.

18 holes without a cart can easily burn 2000 calories.

Try http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc and see if the number it gives you is drastically different from what MFP gave you.

ETA: At my weight, if I enter golfing for 2 hours, carrying the clubs, it gives me a little over 1200.

It could be true, but so much depends on your weight and age, as well as gender. Guys typically get a better burn for the same exercise than gals. If you want a truly accurate measure, get a heart rate monitor. I love my Polar FT7...my group fitness class burn ranges from low 400's to 700, depending on intensity. I agree with the poster that said in the meantime, eat back half your calories.

A heart rate monitor would be useless to track calorie burn from golfing, as they only work for steady state cardio, which golf is not.

As a small comment, 2 lbs per week for me has to be kept in perspective of my current weight at 277
