What are good running stores?

So, I'm starting the C25K plan and I want to get some good running shoes. Everyone says "good to a good running store and get fitted." Well, I went to the mall today, and the athletic shoe stores all had indifferent employees who didn't seem eager to help. Are there some chain stores that people have had good experiences with?
Or, does anyone know of a good way to find a good shoe online? From a "Runner's World" web site, I've already determined that I've got an average arch, am an under-pronater, and strike the ground mid-sole. Now all I need is to find an appropriate shoe!
Also, it's been awhile since I bought athletic shoes... is everyone wearing neon-colored shoes now??! I think they're so ugly, but that's what all the stores seemed to have... :grumble:
