I don't invite direction often, so here's your chance

I'm headed to Austin, TX for the first time this week and need suggestions of things to do/places to go/bands to hear/etc. I've been doing my own research, but have been both disappointed and overwhelmed. Help me out!

Oh, and I'm staying on E. 4th Street and will not be renting a car. I'm not opposed to a few long walks, as long as it's reasonable (I won't be leaving the city)!

Thanks for trying! It looks like you're the only helpful Texan awake this morning. I may have to bump it again later.

    6th street @ night
4th Street: Piano Bar (typically an older crowd)
    Bridge: the bat cave
    Barton Creek Swimming Hole
Carlos and Charlies: you'll need to hail a cabbie for that
Salt Lick BBQ: you'll need to get a cab for that too but worth every penny of it.

    Have fun!

The UT tower would be a bit of a walk form 4th street but it's not bad. If I recall correctly it's along Guadloupe just before 26th, but it's been just over a decade since I've been.

Oh and the Salt Lick is amazing if it's the place I am thinking of (and I am pretty sure it is)

These are all good. I'll add:
    The Oasis restaurant
Rudy's BBQ (less expensive than Salt Lick but really good, too)
    Torchy's Tacos
    Zilker Park
    The Capitol
    University of Texas campus

Rudy's is respectable but not compared to Salt Lick.

You might like UT, but don't blame me if you don't...LOL!

I haven't found a place that really compares to Salt Lick!

What are you in to? Sixth street is very dance/drink oriented. The Red River area is more live band friendly.

Salt Lick definitely has its own thing and extremely good BBQ. However, it's not my favorite place in Texas...not by a long shot.

    My favorite places:
    1. Luling City Market
    2. Kruez's
    3. Black's
    4. Smitty's
    5. Snows (in Lexington)
    6. Meyer's (in Elgin)

Those aren't in any particular order, just the ones I will go out of my way to get if I'm BBQ hungry. They say Snow's is the best in Texas and it's not even close. Unfortunately, they are only open on Saturdays and from 8:00 am until they run out of meat. That's some serious BBQ.

I am decidedly more live-band than dance/drink! I'll check out Red River. Thanks!

I ate at a Rudy's in (err.. just outside) San Antonio... different places?

No. Rudy's is a chain now. They have them all over San Antonio and Austin, with cities in between and have branched out to College Station and Houston area.

Salt Lick did open up another restaurant in Round Rock, by the ballpark where the Express play. I mean...right by it.

This is my favorite! Didn't mention it because it's too far a drive from Austin. Have you eaten at the one here in Houston?

No. It's not the same nor is it associated with the original. At least that's what the owners in Luling tell me.

    Is it any good?
