My Husband would like one and I wanted to get him one for his birthday. It doesn't have to be with lots of bells and whistles, but something that will give him an good idea of how many calories he burns during his daily workouts etc. He does not want one with a chest strap. It seems Polar is a good brand, suggestions please. Thanks!

I have Polar. Ones with chest straps are the most reliable on calorie burn.0

I have a MIO (very much like this: http://www.cabelas.com/womens-watches-mio-womens-drive-petite-heart-rate-monitor-watch.shtml?WT.tsrc=CSE&WT.mc_id=GoogleBaseUSA&WT.z_mc_id1=1295282&rid=40&mr:trackingCode=F6194773-D038-E111-B2D2-001B21631C34&mr:referralID=NA) that I got a few years ago at Academy. I like it, but it seems when I'm walking, it doesn't detect my heart rate until I get sweaty. Could be me doing it wrong, but that's the only complaint I have about it. It was like $45 or there abouts.0 -

I have told him that people on MFP say use the chest strap ones but he doesn't want one like that, but prefers a watch type.0 -
I have a polar with a chest strap and I don't find the strap at all weird or uncomfortable. Then again, I'm a girl and I'm used to wearing bras all day. It might be different for a dude.
All that aside, the chest strap is soft and comfortable.0 -
I beleive Garmin has some without the chest strap. http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-NSBLS.html
I don't know how reliable they are though. I've always used the Polar with the chest strap. You really don't notice it at all once you have it on if he's concerned about it bothering him.0
